James died in 1824 in Jasper County, Georgia. An obituary transcribed on Ancestry.com states:
"Another Revolutionary Patriot gone
Died in Monticello on the 14th, James Wilson, ESQ in the 79th year of his age of a slow and lingering disease of several years continuance. He was a Captain the Revolutionary struggle of 76 and was distinguished among the brave and enterprizing soldiers. He was twice captured by the enemy. He was a member of the convention which formed the constitution of South Carolina. He was a citizen of Georgia 22 years. Member of the Baptist Church 40 years. He left behind a pious and tender companion and a large family."[3]

Notice for the sale of land owned by James at the time of his death appeared as follows: "NOTICE - On the first Tuesday in November next, will be sold at the Court house in Monticello, Jasper County the following lots of land, to wit: Lot No. 326, in the 3rd district of Early County, Lot No. 405, in the 26th district of Early County, Lot No. 373 in the 5th district of Appling county Drawn by the late Mr. James Willson, Sen'r of Jasper county, dec'd, sold for the benefit of the heirs of said dec'd. Terms made known on the day of sale. James Willson Benjamin H. Willson for selves and for the other heirs and legatees of James Willson, Sr. dec'd. Sept. 20, 1825"[4]
