Luther Stewart was born in Mississippi in 1870 to Sarah Stewart. Stewart was his mother's maiden name. His father is unknown. A research project via Ancestry ProGenealogists services looked at the DNA of three of Luther's great grandchildren. The results suggested strongly that Luther's father may have been a Comer from South Carolina, or possibly a Johnson or Mitchell.[1]
His mother, Sarah, married a widower, Joseph Bankston Regions in 1877 in Morton, Scott County, Mississippi. In 1880, Luther is shown living with his mother and Joseph in Scott County, Mississippi. Although he is listed as Joseph's son, Luther never took the Regions name.[2]
In 1885, Luther was enrolled in school along with his step-siblings and half-brother by Joseph B. Regions in Morton, Mississippi.[3]
Joseph and Sarah's union produced Luther's half-brother, Joseph "John" Marion Regions. They moved to Louisiana in 1886.
Luther was living in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, in 1900, with his wife, Sallie, and four children ( daughters - Levania,[4] Wiley aka Milly, and Sarah, and son, William).[5]
In 1910, the family was still in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. The household included Luther and Sarah, 8 of their children (William, Sarah, Joseph, George, Orrin, Orvin, Orie and Annie) as well as Sarah's parents.[6] The census stated that they had 14 children but only 10 were still living in 1910. Luther was farming.

According to a Stewart descendant (Bruce Stewart),[7] Luther moved his family to Athens, Claiborne Parish, Louisiana due to his wife's poor health. The move probably took place between 1910 after the census was taken and 1916 when Luther returned to work in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Luther died of swamp fever in Epps, Louisiana, according to his granddaughter, Verbie (Stewart) Sumrall. However, his Louisiana death certificate places his death in Floyd, West Carroll Parish, Louisiana, on 26 Oct 1916 due to Acute Nephritis.[8][9] Luther is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Chestnut, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana.[10] Sallie then moved the family to Crowville, Louisiana to be near her brother, W. A. Simmons.
Four of Luther and Sarah's children died at or near birth and were buried in undated and unnamed graves, noted only as Luther Stewart Child.[11]
Luther and Sarah were mentioned in the death record of their daughter, Levonia Stewart Lightsey in 1935. The record misspelled her name as Lennria Lightsey.[12]
Ancestry ProGenealogist, Joseph Shumway, was hired in June, 2016, to try to determine the father of Luther Stewart as he was illegitimate and retained his mother's maiden name of Stewart. A comparison of DNA from three great grandchildren of Luther Stewart's, descended from three different Luther Stewart's children, led to the strong suspicion that Luther's unknown father may have been a Comer. All the of great grandchildren have a lot of DNA that match up to Comer people, particularly from Union, South Carolina. The three great grandchildren were Wayman Stewart, Jennifer Yesil and Carolyn Martin. None of the great grandchildren are aware of any Comer ancestors in their line.
Another conclusion drawn from the research was that Daniel Comer was a direct ancestor of Wayman Stewart, according to Wayman's DNA. Wayman is also related by DNA to the manager of Daniel Comer's profile, Carl Comer, and another Wikitree contributor, Edward Comer, based on FTDNA. The other two great grandchildren are most likely related to these people as well.
An email from a Gardner descendant on 11/09/2021 suggested: Martha Stewart married Daniel Jefferson Gardner (1831-1902) and they had children. Martha (Stewart) Gardner died in 1871 in Scott County, Mississippi. I believe her older sister Sarah Stewart had an affair with Daniel Jefferson Gardner and they had a child Luther out of wedlock.
