By 1939 Richard is listed in the 1939 Register of England and Wales as an "Engineering draughtsman and manager's assistant" (working for his father)
On July 29, 1942, he married Irene Margaret Scott (probably in Blackheath or Greenwich, in south-east London, England); the marriage was registered at Lewisham.
By 1950, Irene and Richard were living in a small cottage in a village called Mathon (near to Colwall and Great Malvern) in Worcestershire, England; I remember that when one wanted to have a bath this was executed in a tin tub on the floor in the kitchen!
By 1955 they had moved to Fernhill, a big house just outside the village of Cradleigh (again near Malvern) in Worcestershire, England.
Richard became the managing director of a family-owned iron and steel works in Worcester; it was not a job that he was cut out for, and he became increasingly depressed by the job and the associated responsibilities.
Sadly, in 1963, Richard took his own life in a bout of severe depression related to work and Southall family issues.

Direct personal acquaintance and knowledge (Richard Thomas Southall was the husband of a paternal aunt of the profile manager).
My uncle Richard LOVED the outdoors -- walking in the Malvern Hills; skiiing in Switzerland; growing vegetables and flowers in the garden at Fernhill. However, he was also an eldest son with an enormous sense of duty and responsibility who had been brought up to take over an outdated, industrial family business undergoing huge pressures due to social and industrial change.
I am quite certain that he felt trapped by a job he had never either sought or desired. The conflict between his own desires and priorities and those of others to whom he felt a duty that he was unable to fulfill led to his early demise
