Biography

Ann Percival was born in 1801, married in 1821, had a number of children, then moved to Upper Canada in 1852 after her husband passed away the year before. She died in Canada in 1876.

Much is not (yet) known about Ann's early life, her hometown or parents.

In 1821, William Douglass married Ann Percival in the Diocese of Ossory.[1][2]. The Marriage Bond index does not indicate which church, but the diocese of Ossory does overlap County Wexford. Assuming they were married in Ann's home church, it could be in Templeshanbo or nearby.

After William died, it has been assumed that Ann emigrated to Upper Canada (what is now known as Ontario, Canada), with her children. Presumably, she lived for another 25 years as a widow. However, no records have been found (yet) in the censuses to sustain that.

However, by late 1875 / early 1876 she was definitely with her children in Euphrasia Township, Grey County, for that is where she passed away on 8 Feb 1876, three weeks after suffering a paralytic stroke.[3]

In the end, William and Ann had 6 children, 25 grandchildren, and at least 43 great-grandchildren, and their descendants have spread from Ireland to various parts of Ontario, Canada, to Saskatchewan, and to Edmonton, Alberta, to British Columbia, down to Los Angeles, California, and even all the way to Buenos Aires, Argentina in South America. Who knows where the next generations will end up?

Research Notes

One theory worth following up on :

The youngest son, Richard, also does not show up in the Canadian Censuses until after 1871. According to the obituary of Walter Douglass, the family, or at least some of the family, went to Ohio for about five years, then returned. It is quite possible that Richard and Ann instead of returning to Canada in around 1860, they stayed in the United States, where Richard eventually found a bride. Then, later, they moved back to Canada to rejoin the rest of the family, perhaps when Ann knew that her life was coming to a close, wanting to see the rest of her children one more time.
