Biography

Henrietta Payne was born in Virginia on 10 December 1771.[1][2] Her father was Josias (or Josiah) Payne, evidenced by a 1796 petition by her and her siblings Keziah and John to the Virginia House of Delegates for approval of the nuncupative will of prominent Alexandria, Virginia, tavern-keeper John Lomax, which gave a residual bequest to the children of Josiah Payne after the death or remarriage of Lomax's widow.[3] The Petition stated that the conditions of this conditional bequest had been triggered.[4]

Henrietta had married Christopher Skillman on 9 March 1793 in Loudoun County, Virginia, and he was involved in this claim to the Lomax estate. He and Henrietta joined with her sister Keziah (Payne) Beveridge and her husband, John Beveridge, in settling the claim for 90 pounds in an Indenture filed in the Hustings Court for Alexandria on 5 March 1800.[5] The Indenture was signed on 13 November 1799 and recites that Josiah Payne had been "a brother of the half-blood by the Mother's side" with Lomax and was also dead at that time. [5]

Henrietta and Christopher Skillman had the following children–first in Virginia; then in Bourbon County, Kentucky, where they moved about 1806:[2]

Henrietta passed away on 15 February 1848.[1].

Research Notes

Henrietta Payne has at times been identified as the daughter of Josias Payne Jr. (1735-1804) and Elizabeth (Fleming) Payne (1735-1789). [11]. This is impossible since, as Josiah Payne, Jr.'s, profile shows, he was alive at the time Henrietta said her father was dead.

The names of Henrietta and Christopher's children reflect the family relationships shown here. They named a daughter "Violinda" for her mother and a son "Josiah Payne" for her father. They named a daughter "Keziah" and a son "James Beverage" (or Beveridge, both are used in the attached Indenture) for her sister and brother-in-law.

The connections beween John Lomax, Josias Payne and Violinda (Payne) Skinner had been well-documented years before any claim was made to the Lomax estate. When her mother obtained a bond to administer the estate of her father when he died in 1782, John Lomax joined in the bond.[12]. Some of the property identified in the inventory of the estate of Josias Payne, specifically two slaves named Sarah and Newman,[13], were specified in 1790 as a part of the dower received by the remarried Virlinda Skinner, as the widow of Josias Payne.[14]
