Biography

George was born about 1812, the son of John Meiser and Elisabeth Miller. In 1837, when he was about 25 years old, he married Mary (Helwig). [1] They had the following known children:

  1. Benjamin Mizer (1838)
  2. Mary Elizabeth Mizer (1840)
  3. John Wesley Mizer (1843)
  4. Simon Mizer (1846)
  5. Samuel Mizer (1849)
  6. Margaret Mizer (1853)
  7. George W Mizer (1855)

The 1850 Census shows the family in Bucks Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio, surrounded by relatives. George was farming, valuing his real estate at $4,000, and the household consisted of George Miser (38) and Elizabeth (35), with children Benjamin (12), Mary (9), John W (6), Simon (3) and Samuel (1).[2] (NOTE: Be careful; there are six different George Miser's in Tuscarawas County in 1850!)

The family remained in the same location for the next ten years, and by 1860 oldest son Benjamin was no longer in the home, but two more children—Margret (1853) and George W (1855)—had been added. George was still farming, now valuing his real estate at $6,500 and his personal estate at $850.[3] The 1875 Ohio County Land Ownership Map for Bucks Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio, indicated that the Mizer families owned the vast majority of the land in the southeast corner of Bucks Township.[4]

George has a biographical sketch in the 1884 edition of The History of Tuscarawas County, Ohio, which extolls his hunting skills. He was reportedly the first "white child" born in Tuscarawas County (although that's likely disputable, he was definitely the first of his parents' children born there).[5]

George passed away in 1886[6] and is buried at Evans Creek Lutheran Cemetery in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.[7]
