Jessie was born in Illinois about 1866, and was the younger brother of Tenie Mitchell Cook, in whose household in Clinton, Clinton County, Iowa, he was living at the time of the 1880 United States Census[1]. It appears that Jessie may have been visiting his sister Tenie (Lovena) on the day of the census, as he also appears in the family household on in Fulton, Whiteside County , Illinois, for the same census year[2]. Information on both census pages were recorded on the same date.
He is found in the family home in Fulton during the 1870 United States Census with his father, listed as Harvey, mother, listed as Belle (this name never appears later in relation to Jesse's parentage), and older siblings Willis, Adaline, Lovena, Henrietta, and Frank, as well as younger sister, Charlotte[3]. Harvey states he was born in Indiana, and Belle in Virginia.
Jessie married Ida May Akins in Clinton on 01 March, 1887, when he was 20 years old[4]. The marriage record indicates that Jessie was born across the Mississippi River in Fulton, Whiteside County, Illinois, and that his parents were Horie (Harvey/Howie) Mitchell and Jane Strawder. In Jessie's entry for the 1880 census, both parents are listed as having been born in Virginia.
It appears that the couple settled down in Fulton, as all of their children subsequently show as having been born in Illinois.
In 1893, Jessie (Jess) and Ida became the parents of Howard Mitchell, possibly named after Jessie's father, Howie. Howard names both Jessie and Ida in his marriage certificate in 1914[5].
By the 1900 United States Census, Jessie, Ida, daughter Mamie (age 11), and sons Edward (age 9) and Howard (age 6), were living on Plumb Street in Fulton (now 7th Avenue)[6].
The 1910 United States Census finds Jessie, Ida, and children Manda (age 21), Edward (age 19), Howard (age 16), Norman (age 6), Willford (age 3) and Willard (age 2) all living together at 115 Fourth Street in Fulton, where Jessie was employed as a barber[7].
He passed away after 1910.
