Husband of Anne Stewart Brewer (from 1941 to 1962 - his death)

Tom Mitchell is famous as a wonderful character actor who has played a number of memorable roles in famous movies. He was Scarlet O'Hara's father in Gone with the Wind. He was Uncle Billy in It's a Wonderful Life. He was Doc Boone in Stagecoach. He was also the first male actor to win an Oscar, an Emmy, and a Tony award.

His final role on the stage in the early 60's was that of Columbo, which would later be played on television by Peter Falk. He died on December 17, 1962 of peritoneal mesothelioma (abdominal cancer) while in Beverly Hills, California. He was 70 years old. He was cremated and his ashes interred at the Chapel of the Pines Crematory in Los Angeles.
