Biography

Ephraim Mikell was born in 1696. He was a captain of a Regiment of Foot in the expedition to St. Augustine in 1740. (need source) He was the son of Ephraim Mickele Sr.[1] Ephraim Mikell Jr., like his father, lived on Edisto Island, Colleton, County/Charleston County, South Carolina.

Marriage

Ephraim Mikell's first wife Mary was still alive in 1727 when they signed a deed together.[2]

At the time of his death Mikell was married to Elizabeth Hazard, widow of John McGillvery(McGilvrey), the daughter of Will'm Hazard Sr. She had a sister named Mrs. Mary Wagg.[3][4]

Property

Ephraim Mikell Jr. in his will gives these properties to his sons:[3]

  • the plantation bought of Mr.(Richard) Waring, 739 acres, to son John who was residing on it[5]
  • Uhawas, 350 acres, to son Benjamin Mikell

Slaves

Ephraim Mikell was a slaveholder. His will and probate inventory named a number of slaves on 2 plantations:[6]

  • 1743 probate inventory
  • Port Royal Plantation
  • the Indian Land Plantation (Uhawas?)

For more information please see the Slaves of Ephraim Mikell 1743

Death

Ephraim Mikell died in 1743. His will was written from Granviles(Granville) County[7] on 2 Sept 1743, and it was proven 19 Sept 1743.[3]

Family named in will:[3]

  • Elizabeth Mikell, wife
  • John Mikell, son (1718-1765)[8][9][10]
  • Joseph Mikell, son
  • Benjamin Mikell, son
  • Elizabeth Mikell, daughter

Son, Michael, probably died between 1729 and 1743 as he is spoken of in the will of Ephraim Mickele Sr,[1] but not named or spoken of in his father's will.

News clipping about his estate 19 Sept 1743.[11]

Research Note

The children William and Ursula (and maybe even the John that is connected here) were not listed in this Ephraim Mikell's will, or listed with the other grandchildren in the will of Ephraim's father. Why did Ephraim not include these children in his will? Were they children by his first wife and already had an inheritance? But why were they not in the Will of Ephraim Sr. with the other grandchildren?[1] Or, do they belong to different parents?
