Biography

John Messer was born 1755, Edgefield, South Carolina, the son of James Messer, who was born 1735, Edgefield, South Carolina. Married to Agnes.

John married Agnes (Unknown) and they had ten children: William Messer, John Messer, Stephen Messer, Moses Messer, Sarah Messer, Sion Messer, Prudence Messer, Jacob Messer, Benjamin Messer and Samuel Messer.

John served in the Revolutionary War according to Elmer H. Decker's book, who was a historian of Knox County, Kentucky. [citation needed]

John Messer passed away 19 July 1815 in Kentucky.[1]

There were two John Messers listed in the 1790 census living in South Carolina. One was the John Messer of this profile, living in Edgefield, S.C. The other was a John Messer living in Laurens County, S.C. Circumstantial evidence suggests that it is the Laurens John Messer associated with James Messer (Messer-339). In the 1784 Abbeville, S.C. probate record for James Messer, John Messer was named as the executor. Witnesses were Nathaniel Austin and Holloway Powers. Holloway Powers appears on the 1790 census in close proximity to John Messer, leading me to believe it is the Laurens John Messer associated with James Messer and not the John Messer of this profile.

John Messer's parents are uncertain, but Y-DNA has proven that he is of the patrilineal line of Samuel Watts "alias Mercer" (Watts-837) who was born 1691 in Haverhill, MA and died ca. 1763 in Bladen, N.C. Exact relationship has not been proven but it is quite likely that Samuel was John's grandfather.
