Biography

Birth

Nathaniel Messer was born on 31 Jan 1813 at Marlow, New Hampshire, the son of Alpheus Messer and Betsey (Mason) Messer.[1]

Marriage

Nathaniel Messer married Sylvia Booth, probably on 13 Nov 1843 at either Lempster or Goshen, New Hampshire. See the Research Note below.
In 1850, Nathaniel Messer, 37, farmer, and Sylvia Messer, 24, were living at Lempster with Charles F. Messer, 5, George A. Messer, 2 months, and Nathaniel French, 21, farmer.[2]
In 1860, Nathaniel Messer, 47, farmer, and Sylvia Messer, 34, were living at Alstead, New Hampshire, with Geo. A. Messer, 10, Ella M. Messer, 4, and Daniel Gassett, 19, laborer.[3]
In 1870, Nathaniel Messer, 56, farmer, and Sylvia Messer, 43, were living at Alstead with George Messer, 20, Ella Messer, 13, and Fred W. Messer, 3.[4]

Death

Nathaniel Messer died from typhoid fever on 17 Feb 1873 at Alstead, New Hampshire, with his age recorded as 60 years, 17 days.[5] His gravestone at the Woodland Cemetery in Keene, New Hampshire, is inscribed with the dates 31 Jan 1813 and 17 Feb 1873.[6]

Research Note

There are two transcriptions in the records reporting that marriage of Nathaniel Messer and Sylvia Booth. One says that they were both of Lempster, Hampshire, and were married by Rev. Wait at Goshen, New Hampshire, in November 1843,[7] the other that they were both of Lempster and married by Rev. Wait at Lempster on 13 Nov 1845.[8] Their first child, Charles F. Messer, was born at Lempster on 13 Feb 1845,[9] this establishing the 1843 date as the correct one, but whether the marriage occurred at Goshen or at Lempster remains unknown.
