Biography

James, according to the record of his marriage, appears to have come from South Mymms. Although it was at the time of his birth in Middlesex whereas the marriage was in Northaw, Hertfordshire, the two places are actually only about 8 kilometres from one another.

In February 1803 James married Sarah Rhodes who appears to have been a native of Northaw, or at least that is what the marriage record suggests. Unfortunately, many of the church registers at Northaw were damaged or destroyed in a fire in 1881 so the record of her death before the 1841 Census (in which her husband and daughter appear) suggests that she may have died by then.

After their marriage in 1803 the pattern of christenings and other information suggest that they had at least five children:

  • James (probably born around 1807 but christened Sunday 4 February 1816)
  • Jonathan (probably born about 1811 and christened Sunday 11 February 1816).
  • Mary (probably also born around 1811 and also christened Sunday 11 February 1816)
  • William (probably born about 1813 but also christened 4 February 1816)
  • Charles (probably born 1814 or 1815 and christened Sunday 22 October 1815)

It is unclear why the youngest would have been christened before the other children and why the other four were christened in pairs on consecutive weekends not quite four moths later. Had the family until then not held any strong faith until that time? Had the youngest son been unwell and it was therefore felt that there was some urgency to do so before the others in case he died?

Somewhat interestingly, we also lose track of the youngest son, Charles, after this point. All of the others appear to show-up in subsequent records. Charles may be the same Charles Jones who is arrested and convicted to transportation to Australia in late 1831, but this needs to be confirmed through DNA or other evidence.

For example, James appears in the 1841 Census, living with his daughter Mary and her husband and family. They are still in Northaw at the time, living somewhere around Hook Lane.

James passed away 27 June 1850, at Northaw. The death certificate records that he was then age ‘72’, and having held the occupation ‘shoemaker’. It is informed by his son James and the certificate notes that he is ‘43’ (presumably his age and suggesting his birth in 1807 and making him the eldest).
