Biography

When Lillie Mae Jones was born on 31 October 1898, in Owen, Kentucky, United States, her father, Henry Baltimore Jones, was 54 and her mother, Emma Hudson, was 43.

Oscar Jones was the U.S. Census enumerator in 1900. He visited with Henry Jones on 1 June. They were living in The New Columbus Community. A small community approximately 3 miles from the beginning of Kentucky Hwy 607. Mr. Henry Jones was born in January 1850, Mrs. Emma Jones was born in August 1855 and Ms. Lillie May was born in October 1897 based upon this document and the data Mr. Oscar Jones gives us. Mr. and Mrs. Jones have been married 8 years and Lillie is the only child Emma has borne. Mr. and Mrs. Jones both are able to read and write. They own the farm they are earning their living from. ^[1]

The Jones family of three were the very first family that Mr. Thomas Warnock interviewed for the 1910 U.S. Census on April 15th. He began his work in the New Columbus town. On this document we have a larger age disparity between Henry and Emma. Henry is correct, but Emma somehow only aged 8 years in the last decade. Lillie however is correct at 12 years of age. Emma has had the terrible misfortune of birthing and losing a child in this last decade. Lillie is enrolled in school, and her parents own the farm they are earning their living from. ^[2]

She married Thurman Nicholson on 24 December 1919. R. C. Evans performed the joyful honor of joining these young people in Holy Matrimony. The witnesses were Allen Works and Zorelda Cook. ^{[3] [4]}

Everett Cobb interviewed the young couple on January 17, 1920, on behalf of the U.S. Census Department. He was working the Hesler precinct of Owen County, Kentucky. An interesting factoid on this document. He lists Thurman's occupation as farming, nothing unusual about that but, it lists his industry as the Army. ^[5]

Lillie presented Thurman with his first child, a daughter named Mildred on 2 August 1920. ^[6]

Thurman and Lillie had 4 more children in the 1920's. They had three girls and a boy. Mary Bell was born on 20 May 1927. ^[7]

Lillie and her family were living on Pleasant Grove Rd. on April 24th, 1930 when Raymond Hankins gathered the data for the Census department. Her family consists of eight people; Lillie and Thurman, their five children and her mother. They are renting a farm that Thurman is making his living on. He is correctly listed as a veteran of the World War. ^[8]

Their sixth child, Robert Thurman was born on July 15th, 1931 and he would tragically pass away from Illio Colitis 2 months and 12 days later on September 27th. As sad as this document is we can once again confirm Thurman's birth as being in Washington County, Kentucky. They are living on Rural Route 4, Corinth, Kentucky. Robert was buried in the New Columbus Cemetery on 28 September 1931. ^{[9] [10]}

Thurman and Lillie were very active in the Hudson family reunion. Lillie was the granddaughter of the late Rev. Silas A Hudson and Zorelda White Hudson. This reunion was an annual event for many years. [1] part 2 [2]

Another son, Charles Estill Nicholson was born in October 1933.

Lillie and Thurman are living in southeastern Owen County in April 1940. Their address is Rural Route 2, Corinth, Kentucky. Earl Jackson interviewed one of them on the 13th. He records the family consists of 9 people. Thurman and Lillie, 6 of the youngest children and Emma Jones, Lillie's mother. They own the farm they're earning their living from. Thurman is 45, Lillie Mae is 43. Thurman completed the 8th grade and Lillie the 9th.^[11]

Thurman was the informant on their teenage son's death certificate on May 4, 1947. There seems to be a problem concerning this young man's name. His death certificate was originally completed as William Henry Nicholson, Henry was scratched out and John was added to the first name position. The young man died from Typhoid Fever at the age of 18 years, 3 months and 18 days. ^[12] [3]

The Nicholson family was much smaller on 3 April 1950. Corinne Jones was the Census enumerator that year. She recorded 5 people in the family. They're living on a farm 2 1/4 miles on New Columbus Rd. ^[13]

Lillie was widowed on 19 October 1966 when Thurman passed away. [4] [5]

She died on 27 July 1985, in Owen, Kentucky, United States, at the age of 86. ^[14] [6] She is laid to rest in the New Columbus Cemetery, in southeastern Owen County. Find A Grave: Memorial #16440900
