Biography

Humphrey Jones was born around 1600 (estimated based on 1597 birth of brother).

He was the son of Thomas Jones (based on being the brother of regicide John Jones).

In 1631, he was bound an apprentice to Thomas Bowen of the Mercers Company of London. He was recorded as Humfry Jones, son of Thomas Jones, gent, of Maesygarneth, Merionethshire. The term of apprenticeship was 8 years.[1]

He was the uncle of John Jones (son of regicide John Jones). [2]

He married the widow of Unknown Paine, becoming stepfather to her daughter Mary Paine (of Woolwich, London). Mary married Humphrey's nephew, John Jones, in 1663. [2]

In 1679, he was described as Humphrey Jones, citizen and mercer of London, in legal document releasing his nephew John Jones of Wrexham, Denbighshire, from certain obligations relating to a capital messuage in the parish of Llanenddwyn and other lands also in Merionethshire.[3]

He left a will dated 5 May 1687. His will was proved on 3 October 1690.[4]

Research Notes

He birth is estimated at about 1615, assuming he was in his mid-teens when bound as an apprentice in 1631.

He appears to have married Jane Penenteere, spinster, of London in 1643. On 20 March 1642/3, an annuity of £50 was granted "in consideration of the intended marriage of the said Humfrey Jones and the said Jane Penenteere". The parties to the grant were (1) John Jones, gent., and Humfrey Jones, citizen and mercer, both of London, and (2) Jane Penenteere, spinster, and Dame Anne Myddelton, widow, both of London.[5]
