The St. Marys Railway Fatality
THE INQUEST.
The acting-coroner, Mr. D. McDonald held an inquiry at the Railway Hotel on Thursday of last week concerning the death of Ernest Arthur Lyneham who was killed in an accident at St. Marys station on Saturday, 9th inst.
Robert Tremayne Johnson, junior porter, deposed: I saw deceased at the eastern end of the down platform at the St. Marys Railway Station at about 3.15 p.m. on Saturday, 9th inst. He was coming from the direction of his house, and he was about to cross over the railway line. I saw the engine of the train No. 67 from Sydney approaching. It was a through train, travelling fast.
The engine hit the deceased and knocked him through the picket fence. The train pulled up. I went with Porter Dollin and got the ambulance stretcher and took it up to where the deceased lay. Porter Roberts was there when I got there. The deceased was then dead. I do not think deceased saw the train approaching until it was on him. The deceased was not on duty at the time.
There is no public thoroughfare where the deceased attempted to cross the railway line. There is a notice posted there which reads, "No thoroughfare. Trespassers will be prosecuted." That notice was posted up on the spot at the time of the accident.
To Mr. Inspector Drummond: I did not hear anyone call out to Lyneham. I was about 30 or 40 yards away.
To the Police: There was another train passing at the time towards Sydney. Just after the last carriage of the train to Sydney passed the crossing at the eastern end of the platform on the up road I saw the deceased attempt to cross over.
To the Coroner: The crossing is used by the railway employees when on duty only.
