Mayo Johnson died in a coal mine explosion on 27 Aug 1940
When Mayo Johnson was born on August 22, 1922, in Jenny Line, Sebastian, Arkansas[1], his father, Harry Johnson[1], was 42 and his mother, Frances Clark[1], was 39. He had three brothers and three sisters. He died as a teenager on August 27, 1940, in Bates, Scott, Arkansas[1], and was buried in his hometown.[2]
Early Life
Mayo was borin in Arkansas and named after his father Harry Mayo Johnson. He was the youngest of seven children. He never married or had children. His life was taken early when he was killed in a mining accident.
Death/Legacy
Mayo Johnson had just turned 18 and started his first job at Bates Coal Mining Company in Bates, Scott, Arkansas. His older brother Gilbert C Johnson was also working at the same mine. On August 27, 1940 there was an explosion in the mine killling him and his brother almost instantly.
