I have a West Midland family history with ancestors predominantly from Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire, Leicestershire, Worcestershire, Northamptonshire and Wiltshire.

Some interesting findings have been:

  • Jospeh Corbett from Birmingham, who started as a poor button polisher, gifted buttons to the King, and later did well running a hotel and working to improve the working conditions for the poor.
  • Using wills I've also got back to the 1500s with a degree of certainty on one branch, finding William Edwards the Puritan vicar of Latton in Wiltshire.
  • Leonard Brewin was brother to my great-grandfather, with the family not knowing that he had been sent to Canada as one of the 'home children' due to being orphaned young.
  • William Hooper who served with the 7th Dragoon Guards between 1806 and 1823.
  • William Hitchcock a gardener in seventeenth-century Leicester.

Quite a few ancestors worked in water-powered mills in Birmingham and West Midland industries, these are Henry (Everett) Cross who made edge tools in Coaley and Nechells, William Wilks who was a gun barrel borer in Sutton Coldfield, Charles Evans was a metal roller learning his trade as Bromford Mill on the River Tame, and Jacob Bisp who was an iron frying pan maker likely learning his trade in a mill on the River Frome. Richard Hodgetts probably was a gun barrel borer at Wednesbury Forge, also on the Tame.

DNA Information

I have DNA on GEDmatch, reference Z850487. Mother's GEDmatch RN1673343.

  • Maternal relationship is confirmed by a GEDmatch test match between unnamed mother GEDmatch RN1673343 and her daughter Jenni DIXON GEDmatch Z850487. Estimated number of generations to MRCA = 1.0, based on sharing 3564.0 cM.
  • DNA Relationship with son is confirmed by a GEDmatch test match between ND GEDmatch TU7361635 and his mother JD GEDmatch Z850487. Estimated number of generations to MRCA = 1.0, based on sharing 3522.3 cM across 54 shared segments.
  • Father and paternal grandfather are confirmed by an AncestryDNA test match between ND (son of Jenni (HARRIS) DIXON) and his first cousin twice removed (Jenni's father's known cousin). Their most-recent common ancestors are Edward COLES-HARRIS and Flora Jane BISHOP. Hello J.,

I see that you've created the profile for https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Villers-163 William Villers (-1718). Could you please add his birthdate as you have estimated it in his Bio (~1690) or that of his father (says William was baptised on 17 November 1680 )? Even though it's an estimate, you can tag it as such; and it will then prevent others from editing the profile if they don't have the pre-1700 badge. Thanks, Deb ~ data doctor

Hi Jenni

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

The England Project may fit your research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find other possibilities. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Have questions? Let me know by using the "reply" link under my comments or by clicking my name to visit my profile. From there you can leave a comment or send a private message.

Hi Jenni,

Thanks for volunteering! You are now a confirmed member of the WikiTree community, and can start adding your family. Let me know if you have any questions.

Since WikiTree is different from other genealogy sites, we have a guided tour for new members at New Member How-To. Feel free to work through the How-Tos at your own pace.

Once you add profiles to WikiTree they become searchable and in my experience persons interested in these profiles will contact you and may provide further information to expand your family tree.

Great to have you on board, enjoy, and good luck growing your branches.

Ludwig :)
