Isaac Harris died 12 Sept 1883 in Fresno County, California. The newspaper account tells us what transpired;
"The preliminary examination of Charles Slocum [son in law] for the killing of Isaac Harris was held in Justice Boutons Court on Saturday. A Mono Indian called Tu Wop was principal witness for prosecution and his evidence is corroborated by defendant except as to the commencement of the rencounter; Slocum it seems, had started home with a cow belonging to his wife; but the cow had a bell on it belonging to Harris. After Slocum had gone a mile, the deceased ordered his horse and taking his Winchester rifle started in pursuit. The Indian says as soon as Harris came up and demanded the bell that Slocum fired. The defendant says the deceased came up demanding to know what he was doing with the cow and the bell in a very angry and violent term and prepared to shoot and that he fired only in self defense."
"The Fresno Republican" dated Sat 17 Nov 1883 pg 3; "The case of Charles Slocum [son in law] charged with murder of Isaac Harris went to the jury tuesday afternoon, after deliberation of a few minutes brought a verdict of Not Guilty."
