John Grow of Oxford's ancestry is the subject of much discussion. Some claim he is the illegitimate child of Elizabeth Nichols, a ward of the town of Andover, Massachusetts. Others claim that John was a younger son of the titled Grosvenor family and was cut off from inheritance by the law of primogeniture, so emigrated to America and changed his surname to just "Gros" (or "Grow"). There are no currently known records that give us closure on his parentage. [1][2]
From Davis:
John Grow was born in Andover, MA in 1720. He living in Andover, MA, paid his first poll tax in 1741, and was m. there (by Rev John Barnard) Oct 26, 1742 to Mary Farrington of that place. She was born c1724. In both instances the name is clearly recorded as Grow. They removed to Sutton, MA in 1744 and bought land near the Oxford line. In 1751, 1753, 1758, 1761 and 1765 John Groo of Oxford sold land in Sutton and Oxford. Soon after the last date he seems to have removed to Douglas, MA.
.John married Mary Farrington on 26 October 1742 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.[3]
John Grow and Mary Farrington had sixteen children between August 1743 and April 1765, ten of whom Davis reports descendants. At least four of his sons removed to Tunbridge, VT c1790.
"According to family tradition the cause of the death of John Grow was injuries received from a fall from a load of hay".
Five of his sons served in the American forces during the revolution.
John died on 17 October 1775 in Douglas, Massachusetts.[4]
