Biography

Ralph was the eldest son of Harris Copland and Sarah Mittenthal and was born on April 21, 1888 in Brooklyn, New York. There were 5 children in his family, including Aaron, who would later become a world famous composer.

He attended Columbia Law school, though his passion was always music, and he might have had a career in music, had he not been the eldest son and thus felt a familial obligation to go into either law or medicine.

In his World War I draft registration card he is described as tall and slender with light brown hair and blue eyes. His employment is as a lawyer in his own firm - Harwood and Copland. He has a wife, Dorothy, and mother-in-law as his dependents.

Ralph married Dorothy in 1914. They had two daughters: Sally born in 1922 and June born in 1928.

His World War II registration card states that he works for himself and his law firm is located on Wall Street. He eventually became a US Attorney for New York City.

Ralph committed suicide on March 24, 1952. He is buried at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Glendale, Queens County, New York, USA.
