Biography

Lenora Frances Collins was born in early June 1869 in Union County, Georgia. Her parents were: William Jasper COLLINS, b: 31 Jul 1832 in Mecklenburg, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and his wife, Frances J. (Freeman) COLLINS, b: 3 Aug 1834 in Buncombe County, North Carolina. Her father was a blacksmith who later ran a drug-store and Post Office in Springtown, Benton Co., Arkansas. A life-long Baptist, he was a Confederate supporter and also a 32nd degree Freemason.[1]

Shortly after her birth, Norah Collins and her family moved from northern Georgia to Benton County, Arkansas, where her father became prominent in both business and spiritual community life. Her mother died giving birth to Norah's younger brother when she was only 5 years old. The two were raised by their father and older siblings. Family legend says that the Collins family were part Cherokee Indian, related to the famous Cherokee Chief, Sequoyah, who had invented the Cherokee alphabet and written language. Like Norah, he was born in what became northern Georgia. [2]

On July 30, 1884, at 15 years old, Lenora "Norah" Collins married 24-year old William Henry "Bill" Snow, b: June 26, 1860, in Kansas. William Henry and Nora (Collins) Snow had a son and 2 daughters, one of whom died in infancy:[3]

  1. Reason Noble SNOW b: 28 Jun 1885 in Springtown, Benton Co. Arkansas
  2. Carrie Frances SNOW b: Jan 1,1886 in Springtown, Benton Co. Arkansas; d: June 25,1887 at 18 months old
  3. Lora May SNOW b: 15 Jun 1889 in Springtown, Benton Co. Arkansas

Unfortunately, Norah (Collins) Snow, became ill and died of "consumption" (tuberculosis), shortly after her 21st birthday, on June 17, 1890. She was buried at the Springtown Cemetery, Benton Co., Arkansas, near her infant daughter, Carrie Snow. Her tombstone inscription reads:[4]

"Farewell dear husband and children all; I must go for Jesus calls"
