Biography

John was born 5 Feb 1860 in Fayette County, Texas to parents Peter and Margaret Ann (Rebo) Clawson.[1]

John married Anna Kovář in Fayette County, Texas on the 5th of Nov 1877.[2] In 1880, Anna and John were living in Winchester, Texas. There, they resided with John's mother, Margaret Bacher, and sister Annie. Also noted were Margaret's niece Francis Kovar, a male boarder named R Bregaman, and and grandson (Ann and John's newborn), John.[3]

By 1900, Anna and John were living in Crosby, Texas with numerous children, including the previously name son, John (now 21), Asberry (son aged 17), Martin (son aged 16), Anna (aged 15), Margaret (aged 13), Emma (aged 11), Joseph (son aged 8), Otomie (aged 7), Alphina (aged 6), Alma (aged 3) and Rosa (aged 1).[4]

In Vol. 16, No. 1, Ed. 1 dated 1-Aug-1906 of the Obzor (a semi-monthly Czech language agricultural and horticultural newspaper published between 1891 and 1914 in Hallettsville in Lavaca County), we find the startup charter of Řád Prapor Magnolie, číslo 65 (the Magnolia Battalion, number 65) of which John is a founding member. See Space:Řád Prapor Magnolie, číslo 65[5]

In 1910, Anna and John were listed with some of the previously named children, as well as a new daughter, Dorothy (aged 8) and John's sister (Ellen Ethington (familial relation unknown) and her son George, [6] and finally in 1910, their home now empty, Anna and John are alone on the census.[7]

In an excerpt from 'A History of the Czech-Moravian Catholic Communities of Texas', V.A. Svrcek wrote that when he came to Crosby, there was already an established Czech presence:[8]

Crosby, Texas Some 24 miles east of the city of Houston, in Harris County, is the small but prosperous town of Crosby, with some 20 Czech families. The Czech people began to move here around 1910. In 1912, I. P. Krenek moved here, and there were already the families of Josef Volčik, F. J. Moravek, Joseph Širočka, Karel Machala, Joseph Franta, John Kristinik, Stasny and Clawson.

John passed away 7 Dec 1929 in Highlands, Texas and was interred with his wife Anna at Sterling-White cemetery.[9]
