Biography

Elizabeth was born in the Bahamas in 1874. Her parents were Abraham Carey and Elizabeth Morton.

Elizabeth immigrated to the United States in 1876.[1] It is assumed she was with her parents as she would have been about 2 years old, but no documentation has yet been found.

She married a cousin, William H Carey, on 11 Jun 1895 in Key West, Monroe, Florida.[2] Her maiden name and married name were both Carey. In 1910, they were living at 1321 Angela Street in Key West, Florida. Her husband was listed as W S Carey on the census. His parents, William and Margaret, were living next door. The census indicated they had been married 15 years, and had 4 children with only three living. Children in the home were listed as Gullon (sic), William and Gertrude. Marie apparently was the child who had died. (Note: none of Miriam Carey's family ever heard of Gullon or Gertrude. Miriam herself was born in 1905 so should be on this census. She would have been five, the same age as "Gullon" but he is also listed as a son.[3])[4]

In 1930, the family was still living in Key West, Monroe County, Florida.[1] Their son, William, was living at home. William and his father were listed as seamen on the census. Their daughter, Miriam (on the census as Mary M) was also living with them, along with her husband, George Stewart, and their daughter, Yvonne. By 1940, Elizabeth was widowed and head of household. Her daughter, Miriam, and her husband and three children were living with Elizabeth.[5]

Elizabeth's parents were Abraham Carey and Elizabeth (Morton) Carey according to her death certificate. The informant on her death certificate was her son, Will. She passed away in 1950 in Key West, Florida at the age of 75. Her home in Key West was at 1321 Angela Street although in some records it is numbered 1320 or 1324.

Burial was in the Key West Cemetery in Key West, Monroe County, Florida.[6]
