Notes

John and William served in the Revolutionary War. They were in the Amherst Militia, which was under the command of Lt. Col. John Pope and Major William Cabell, Jr. The Militia left Amherst, September 14, 1781, and reached Yorktown in time to join Lafayette's Army and take part in the battle that ended October 19, 1781, with Cornwallis surrendering...

...The ancestral home of the Camdens which is "Jack's Hill" in Nelson County, received its name from the Revolutionary soldier, John Camden, who was known in the community as "Jack" Camden. It was here that he erected a colonial dwelling on a lofty pinnacle overlooking his extensive holdings in Amherst and Nelson counties. John Camden died in 1828, and his property was passed on to John F. Camden. John F. Camden was also known as "Jack" Camden, in the community John F. Camden and his family lived there. He died in 1862 and one of his sons received the place. (Hardesty's Historical and Geographical Encyclopedia of Amherst County, Marriage Register, Amherst County.)...

... "John Camden, my great-great-great-great-grandfather, was a farmer and settled at the foot of DuPriest Mountain on the waters of Big Piney River, now Nelson County, near what was later known as Friar Post Office and "Jack'sHill" (State Route #666). JOhn married Meonie (Oney) Wright and they built a home on "Jack's Hill" sometimes referred to as "Jack's Back."...

... "Here John and Meonie reared five sons and three daughters:

  • John F. (also known as Jack or Jackson,
  • Benjamin (married Nancy Biddlecomb),
  • William W. (married Jane Hight),
  • James (married Polly Phillips),
  • Wyatt (married Polly Hill),
  • Nancy (married Chappell Davenport),
  • Elizabeth (married John Hight)
  • Sally (married Joseph Eschew.) ...

... The family burial plot, situated less than a hundred yards from the dwelling site, is said to contain the remains of over one hundred persons, many of them former slaves. Much of this ground, however, has been plowed under. Only a dozen or so of the graves are intact and a few of the markers remain. John Camden and his bride, Oney, rest side by side in the family plot in unmarked graves."
