Biography

Thomas Buckmaster

Spelling of the Name

Robert C. Anderson profiled Joanna's second husband, Edward Garfield, and spelled the name "Buckmaster."[1] Also according to Harvey M. Larson, the "Buckminster" spelling was found in records for first and second generations.[2]

Both Thomas and Joseph have the last name Buckmaster. Joseph's son has last name Buckminster, as do some other relatives, even earlier. The name of Buckminster first appears in a deed given to Joseph, son of Thomas, dated July 23 1660 (Suff. Deeds).[citation needed]

Unknown Origin

Thomas Buckmaster is assumed to have been born circa 1593 and baptized on 14 Oct 1593 at Sempringham, Lincolnshire, England (without evidence or citation).[citation needed]

Some assume that Thomas Buckmaster was the son of Thomas Buckminster and Alice Reede.[citation needed] However this is refuted, as the Rev. Thomas Buckminster of All-Hallows-in-the-Wall, London, and his wife, Alice (Reed), widow of Thomas Reninger, were married on 29 Jan 1563, a full thirty years before the birth of their "only" child Thomas Buckmaster.[3]

Immigration

Thomas came, according to tradition, from Wales [Alden, ii. Coll. 180]. He immigrated in 1639 to Sudbury, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, and is named in the Col. records Apr 30 1640, when he received a grant amounting to £10, from the General Court. He and Joanna (Unknown) were admitted to the church with a letter of dismissal from the church in Scituate at Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, 4 Oct 1645.[citation needed] On 6 May 164, Thomas Buckmaster became a freeman at Muddy River, Massachusetts.[2]

Unknown Wife's Maiden Name

Robert Charles Anderson featured her 2nd husband, Edward Garfield, in his article for the Great Migration series and reported she was Joanna (______) Buckmaster, widow of Thomas Buckmaster.[1] Others assume (based on a Family Bible), that Joanna's maiden name was Robinson.[4] [5]

Marriages

Thomas married twice.[citation needed]

  • He married on on 2 Jul 1618 at Sempringham, Lincolnshire, England to Margaret Cossen.[citation needed]
  • He married to Joanna (Unknown).[2] Some assume this marriage took place in 1629 at Sempringham, Lincolnshire, England. Thomas Buckminster and Joane Robinson married 05 Aug 1630,[6] at St Botolph,Boston,England.

Children

Thomas had 9 children (more are reported here).[citation needed] The first group are assumed to have been the children of Thomas and his 1st wife, Margaret (two children were christened at Sempringham[3]):

  1. Lawrence Buckmaster, born Abt. 1619 in England d. England before July 4 1646
  2. Alice Buckmaster, born 1621, shown in some genealogies
  3. Joseph Buckminster, born 8 Aug 1624 in England. buried 4 Nov 1624 shown in some genealogies

Death and Legacy

Thomas Buckmaster died on [7]28 Sep 1656 at Muddy River (later Brookline), Massachusetts Bay Colony.

His will was written on "2 of ye 7th month, 1656" (2 Sept 1656) and was probated Nov. 23, 1656. The Inventory of Thomas Buckmaster was taken £112 16/6d on 2-Nov-1656 at Muddy River, (Norfolk County created 1793), Massachusetts Bay Colony.

From the book Corbin Genealogy, Thomas Buckmaster's Will stated:

I Thomas Buckmaster of Muddy River [now Brookline], being now sick & in my owne apprehension neare ye day of my death, yet being in my perfect sences, doe make this my last will.

I give to my son Zachery forty shillings, to my daughter Elizabeth Spowell, daughter Mary Stevens, daughter Dorcas Corben forty shillings each. To my son Thomas, son Joseph, son Jabesh forty shillings (each to be paid when severally one and twenty years of age). To my daughter Spowell's ten children, twenty shillings, to be put into ye deacon's hands to be improved for ye Children's learning. Unto my daughter Stephen's two children, twenty shillings, daughter Corben's children ten shillings, to my son Zachery's child ten shillings. -wife Joanna, Executrix, giving unto her all my lands and goods. It is my will that my two youngest sons, Joseph and Jabesh dwell with my wife and faithfully serve her till they be one and twenty years of age, but if my wife shall marry before they come to ye age, they shall be free. I give to my daughter Sarah forty shillings, to be paid at her day of marriage, or at ye age of one and twenty years; this was forgotten to be set in place with ye rest; this is my will.
Ye mark X [8][2][9]

His widow Joanna married on Sept. 1, 1661, Edward Garfield of Watertown.[1] Some land went to his son Joseph in 1660 from his deceased father.

Research Notes

Temple (1887), Wheeler (1924), and Hudson (1889) say he was a descendant of John of Peterbourough, Northampton, England. There has been speculation that he was from London, and married his wife at All Hallows in the Wall, London 29 January 1563. This is clearly in error owing to chronology.1,2

Muddy River is now known as Brookline, MA.

Found a Thomas Buckminster baptized on March 23,1587/88,[10] in Boston,Lincolnshire,England, son of Robert, where Thomas Buckminster married Joane Robinson on married 05 Aug 1630.

Findmypast.com: list these different Baptisms for Semperingham, Lincoln, England several different Thomas Buckmynster:
  • 1. Thomas Buckmynster, son of Henrye, Baptism 19 Sept. 1591, Semperingham, Lincoln, England
  • 2. Thomas Buckmynster, son of Godfrye, Baptism 14 Oct 1593, Semperingham, Lincoln, England
  • 3. Thomas Buckmynster, son of John, Baptism 12 May 1604, Semperingham, Lincoln, England

And then there was a Baptism in Horbling:

  • 1. Thomas Buckminster, son of George, Baptism 17 Sept 1598, Horbling, Lincoln, England

I have the two marriages for a Thomas Buckminster:

  • 1. Thomas Buckminster married Mary Allinson, Date 20 June 1614, Whaplode, Lincolnshire, England
  • 2. Thomas Buckminster married Alice Gautherne, Date 07 May 1617, Wigtoft, (Boston), Lincolnshire, England
  • 3. Thomas Buckminster married Margarett Cossen, Date 02 July 1618, Semperingham, Lincolnshire, England

Deaths in 1630 for these Wives, Mary Allinson, Alice Gautherne and Margaret Cossen that married a "Thomas Buckminster" 1. No 1630 deaths that I can see listed for a Mary Allinson whose Wedding was in Wigtoff (Boston) Lincolnshire, England 2 No 1630 deaths for a Alice Gautherne who whose Wedding was Whaplode, Lincolnshire, England 3. Yes Margaret Buckminster, wife of Thomas, her Burial was 24 Jan 1629 at Sempringham, Lincolnshire, England

        • Now. there is NO Baptism Record to be found for Dorcus Buckmaster all through Lincolnshire no Dorcus. . .I know her birth is put at the year 1629. So, perhaps she was born just before her mom Margaret Cossen's Burial 24 Jan 1629. Or maybe she was born later, after her father's Arrival which was the year 1640, when Thomas arrived at Massachusetts.

Now there is a Marriage at Boston, Lincolnshire, England Thomas Buckminster married Joane Robinson, at "Boston" which is next to or part of Wigtoff, Lincolnshire, England, Date: 5 Aug. 1630.

"There is Also a huge list of Children born at Semperingham, Lincolnshire, baptized by a Thomas Buckminster And there is a smaller amount of children born at Wigtoff, Lincholnshire, baptized by a Thomas Buckminster

Continued Records from Findmypast.com are these Baptism at Sempringham, Lincolnshire, England the Father a Thomas Buckminster:

  • 1. Laurence / Lawrence Buckminster, Bapt. 12 Sept. 1619
  • 2. Ann Buckminster, Bapt. 2 Sept. 1621, possibly twin of Alice (Both were baptized on the same day)
  • 3. Alice Buckminster, Bapt. 2 Sept. 1621, possible twin of Ann (Both were baptized on the same day)
  • 4. Joseph Buckminster, Bapt. 8 Aug 1624, Burial: 4 Nov. 1624
  • 5. Zachariah Buckminster, Bapt. 13 Dec. 1625. . . There are NO Burial for him so he probably came with this Dad Thomas Buckmaster and his 2nd wife Joanna Robinson. Zachariah's Step-mother was Johanna Robinson.
  • 6. Elizabeth (Eliza) Buckminster, Bapt. 17 Aug 1628. . .There are no Burial's so she was the Elizabeth that married Thomas Spowell.

If Joanna Robinson is the 2nd wife who Thomas married after the death of Margaret Cossen his first wife then these are the children born after that marriage on 5 Aug 1630.

  • 1. Mary Buckminster, abt. 1631, Im Wondering Could Mary be Lawrence's child that he asked to be taken care of, when he went back to England 1645.
  • 2. Possibly Dorcus Buckmaster, Abt. 1633, unless she born in the 1629. Then her mother would be. Margaret Cossen, who died from the complications of her birth. . .But there is NO Baptism Record yet discovered.
  • 4. Joseph Buckmaster, born 31 Jan 1636
  • 5. Thomas Buckmaster, Born Abt. 1637;1638
  • 6. Jabez Buckminster, Born 31 Jan 1647

So, this is what I have found. FINDMYPAST.com may have some more clues to help put this family together correctly. Sincerely, Cathi Gross

PS: Thomas Buckminster Baptism Date of 14 Oct 1593, at Semperingham, Lincolnshire, England says his father was Godfreye Buckminster on the documents found at FINDMYPAST.com. There is a 1630 Lincolnshire marriage record attached to his second wife, Joanna's, profile on FamilySearch. If it is actually them, it would confirm her maiden name as Robinson.

"England, Lincolnshire, Parish Registers, 1538-1990," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QPSK-T13T : 21 January 2020), Thomas Burkminster and Joane Robinson, 5 Aug 1630; citing Marriage, 5 Aug 1630, Boston, Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom, Lincolnshire Record Office, Lincoln; FHL microfilm .

edit: There is also a 1593 Lincolnshire christening record for a Thomas with the father Godfrye Buckmynster. Godfrye is a better candidate for a son of the elder Thomas and Alice Reede, but there's no record for his father there yet. Worth looking into?

"England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JQRT-5N1 : 18 September 2020), Thomas Buckmynster, 1593.

Seems the parents currently attached should be detached. They are not a possibility - do we know his parents? Thanks!
