Thomas Buckmaster
Robert C. Anderson profiled Joanna's second husband, Edward Garfield, and spelled the name "Buckmaster."[1] Also according to Harvey M. Larson, the "Buckminster" spelling was found in records for first and second generations.[2]
Both Thomas and Joseph have the last name Buckmaster. Joseph's son has last name Buckminster, as do some other relatives, even earlier. The name of Buckminster first appears in a deed given to Joseph, son of Thomas, dated July 23 1660 (Suff. Deeds).[citation needed]
Thomas Buckmaster is assumed to have been born circa 1593 and baptized on 14 Oct 1593 at Sempringham, Lincolnshire, England (without evidence or citation).[citation needed]
Some assume that Thomas Buckmaster was the son of Thomas Buckminster and Alice Reede.[citation needed] However this is refuted, as the Rev. Thomas Buckminster of All-Hallows-in-the-Wall, London, and his wife, Alice (Reed), widow of Thomas Reninger, were married on 29 Jan 1563, a full thirty years before the birth of their "only" child Thomas Buckmaster.[3]
Thomas came, according to tradition, from Wales [Alden, ii. Coll. 180]. He immigrated in 1639 to Sudbury, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, and is named in the Col. records Apr 30 1640, when he received a grant amounting to £10, from the General Court. He and Joanna (Unknown) were admitted to the church with a letter of dismissal from the church in Scituate at Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, 4 Oct 1645.[citation needed] On 6 May 164, Thomas Buckmaster became a freeman at Muddy River, Massachusetts.[2]
Robert Charles Anderson featured her 2nd husband, Edward Garfield, in his article for the Great Migration series and reported she was Joanna (______) Buckmaster, widow of Thomas Buckmaster.[1] Others assume (based on a Family Bible), that Joanna's maiden name was Robinson.[4] [5]
Thomas married twice.[citation needed]
Thomas had 9 children (more are reported here).[citation needed] The first group are assumed to have been the children of Thomas and his 1st wife, Margaret (two children were christened at Sempringham[3]):
Assumed to have been the children of Thomas and 2nd wife, Joanna:
Thomas Buckmaster died on [7]28 Sep 1656 at Muddy River (later Brookline), Massachusetts Bay Colony.
His will was written on "2 of ye 7th month, 1656" (2 Sept 1656) and was probated Nov. 23, 1656. The Inventory of Thomas Buckmaster was taken £112 16/6d on 2-Nov-1656 at Muddy River, (Norfolk County created 1793), Massachusetts Bay Colony.
From the book Corbin Genealogy, Thomas Buckmaster's Will stated:
I Thomas Buckmaster of Muddy River [now Brookline], being now sick & in my owne apprehension neare ye day of my death, yet being in my perfect sences, doe make this my last will.
I give to my son Zachery forty shillings, to my daughter Elizabeth Spowell, daughter Mary Stevens, daughter Dorcas Corben forty shillings each. To my son Thomas, son Joseph, son Jabesh forty shillings (each to be paid when severally one and twenty years of age). To my daughter Spowell's ten children, twenty shillings, to be put into ye deacon's hands to be improved for ye Children's learning. Unto my daughter Stephen's two children, twenty shillings, daughter Corben's children ten shillings, to my son Zachery's child ten shillings. -wife Joanna, Executrix, giving unto her all my lands and goods. It is my will that my two youngest sons, Joseph and Jabesh dwell with my wife and faithfully serve her till they be one and twenty years of age, but if my wife shall marry before they come to ye age, they shall be free. I give to my daughter Sarah forty shillings, to be paid at her day of marriage, or at ye age of one and twenty years; this was forgotten to be set in place with ye rest; this is my will.
Ye mark X [8][2][9]
His widow Joanna married on Sept. 1, 1661, Edward Garfield of Watertown.[1] Some land went to his son Joseph in 1660 from his deceased father.
Temple (1887), Wheeler (1924), and Hudson (1889) say he was a descendant of John of Peterbourough, Northampton, England. There has been speculation that he was from London, and married his wife at All Hallows in the Wall, London 29 January 1563. This is clearly in error owing to chronology.1,2
Muddy River is now known as Brookline, MA.

edit: There is also a 1593 Lincolnshire christening record for a Thomas with the father Godfrye Buckmynster. Godfrye is a better candidate for a son of the elder Thomas and Alice Reede, but there's no record for his father there yet. Worth looking into?
