Biography

Mabel was born in 1870 the daughter of James Bell and Martha Feetham. She was christened on 8 Dec 1872 on the same day as her brother, Frederick James Bell, who was born in 1872. Her father's occupation at this time was noted as "footman". In 1871 she is 11 months old and residing with her parents and older sister Laura in the Brompton area of Kensington. In 1881 she is a 10 year old scholar and living in West Hackney with her family. There are now 5 children and at this time her father's occupation is listed as "police constable". In 1891 Mabel is aged 20 and employed as a domestic housemaid at 56 Porchester Tce, Paddington, in the household of Mr Stephen George Holland a well known and celebrated philanthropist and art collector in late Victorian London Society. It is also interesting to note that at this time Mabel's family were living in 38 Templar Road, Hackney. Right next door at number 36 was the Wrighton family, including their eldest son, 22 year old Frank Wrighton, a commercial clerk. This is interesting because 2 years later Mabel and Frank were to marry. In 1901 the young couple are living in Hackney where Frank is employed as a timber merchants clerk. There is a record in 1907 of Mabel and Frank Wrighton traveling to Halifax Canada. It is not known if this is our Mabel and Frank but they cannot have stayed there long as in 1911 they are back in London living in Chelmsford where Frank is now employed as a ball bearing machinist. It is noted in the census of that year that the couple have been married 17 years and that they have not had any children. Frank died in 1915 aged 47 years. In 1917 Mabel remarried to the widower George Bullard and they lived in Chelmsford. George died in 1948 and Mabel died 9 years later in 1957
