Biography

James BELL was born on 21 March 1867, in Carr Hill, Durham, England, the son of Thomas BELL and Elizabeth BUCHANAN.[1]

He was christened on 8 July 1868 in Windy Nook, Durham, England, at St Alban Church in Heworth parish.[2]

In 1871, he was living with his family in Windy Nook.[3]

He emigrated to the Colony of South Australia (SA). He arrived, with his parents, in Port Adelaide SA on 9 April 1879 aboard the Trevelyan, having departed London on 25 December 1878 and Plymouth on 5 January 1879.[4]

James married Hannah KING on 30 March 1892 in Adelaide SA (at the Christian Chapel, Bentham Street).[5] The couple had only child, a son – James Wentworth – born in 1892.

He resided in Perth, Western Australia (WA), with Hannah.

He worked in Murray Street, Perth WA, as a saddler.[6]

He was a member of the United Ancient Order of Druids and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.[7]

He last resided in Blencowe Street, Leederville WA.[8][6]

James died, aged 43 years, of acute pneumonia, on 18 May 1909, at his residence in Leederville WA.[9][8][7][10][11]

His funeral service was held (officiated by the Rev J S Needham), and he was interred (buried), on 19 May 1909, in the Anglican portion of the Karrakatta Cemetery, Karrakatta WA.[6][7][12][13]

    The funeral of the late Mr. James Bell,
    saddler, late of Murray-street, Perth, took
    place yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon in
    the Anglican portion of the Karrakatta
    Cemetery, and was largely attended by
    many members of the U.A.O. Druids and
    Independent Order of Oddfellows and a
    large number of friends of deceased, who
    passed away, after a short illness, of acute
    pneumonia. The chief mourners were Mrs.
    H. I. A. Bell (widow), J. W. Bell (son),
    Mrs. Simpson, Miss McFarland, and Mrs.
    Shepley. The pall-bearers were Messrs. T.
    Dunn, Hugo Fischer, W. E. Rossiter, J. S.
    Milne, F. J. G. Miller, and T. O. I. Hanlon.
    Amongst those present were Messrs. D.
    Dunn, B. Rosenstamm, J. Hayles, G. H.
    Cook, W. Pike, W. Butter, W. Brooks, T.
    Smith, L. Rilstone, R. Payge, Lewis, Filear,
    R. Kettle, W. Mack, Lester, and E. Harling.
    A large number of wreaths and floral tri-
    butes were received from many friends.
    The Rev. J. S. Needham officiated at the
    grave, and the funeral arrangements were
    carried out by Mr. Donald J. Chipper.
