As a pastor at Ipswich, he came under persecution by Bishop Wren, and he left for London. About 1637/8 he went to New Engand with a band of Puritans, having to go onboard in disguise to excape detection.
Rev. John Allen was the first minister of Dedham, Massachusetts Bay, organizing the church of Christ in 1638, and serving in that role for the rest of his life. Among other accomplishments, John Allen was elected an Overseer of Harvard College on 18 Oct 1654. He wrote a pamphlet entitled "Defense of the Nine Questions, or Positions.[1]

The Life of Mr. JOHN ALLIN, from Cotton Mather's Magnalia Christi Americana.[1]
John Allin was born in the Year 1596. He passed his courses and became a "faithful Preacher of Christ."
"It is an ancient observation, that there were three things done by the Holy Spirit of God, on and for the Prophets, which were employ'd in Publick Service for him: One was to give them Courage against the Rage of Adversaries. Another was, to give them Wisdom, for to regulate their Conduct. A third was, to give them Vertue and Holiness, that their own Consciences might not sting them, when they were to bestow Aculeate[8] Rebukes upon the Vices of other Men....With all of these Excellencies, did ... God, ... adorn our Allin."'[1]
Because of the persecution of Puritans in England, John Allin traveled to and settled in the American Wilderness. When the church of Dedham, was gathered in 1638, John became the pastor, which he continued at until after a 10 day "easy" sickness, he died 26 Aug 1671.
His accomplishments were considerable, yet he was humble, and sweet tempered and adds this as his epitaph quoted from Phillippus Gallus:
From Great Migration Directory: Allin, John: Saxlingham-juxta-Mare, Norfolk; 1637; Dedham [DeTR 1:32; DeChR 5; MBCR 1:374; NEHGR 41:68-69; ODNB; TAG 67:29]. (This John Allin was not son of Reginald Allin of Colby, Norfolk, and was not minister at St. Mary Quay, Ipswich, Suffolk.)
Ordained at Petersbourough on 6 Aug 1620. attended Christ's College at Cambridge; received his BA at Cambridge on 12 August 1616
The church at Dedham, Massachusetts, was gathered the eighth day of the ninth month 1638. (8 Nov 1638). But in 1636, with only about 30 families, they had begun to meet to discuss and decide the manner and form of their church. John Allin was a leading man in this group. "After nearly two years trial of the gifts and graces of each person in the church, John Allin was selected as the leading church officer." On the 24th day of the 2nd month 1639 (24 April 1639) "John Hunting with the two brethren, laid hands on his head, and pronounced the words of ordination." "Mr. Allin's church continued in great harmony all his life time..."[9]
Disputed Parentage. Please see GMD p. 6 where it says that REginald Allen of Colby was not the father. Thank you.
Consider, please, Reginald detached. Another profile created or found - Unknown Allin - to keep sibling relationship with Elizabeth Allen-7973. I haven't researched to discover if Richard Allen is an actual sibling.
