Biography

Julius Allen is a part of US Black heritage.
Julius was born in 1917. In the 1920 census Julius (age 2) was the son of Bud Allen in Butterwood, Halifax, North Carolina.[1] In the 1930 census Jule (age 12) was the son of Thomas Allen in Butterwood, Halifax, North Carolina, United States.[2] His Social Security Number would have been issued in 1936–1950 in North Carolina.

Julius registered for the draft on 16 October 1940 in Norfolk, Virginia, United States. He was living at 120 East Brambleton Avenue in Norfolk, and working for the Navy YMCA on Brook Avenue in Norfolk. He later lived at 1021 Wolf Street, 127 S. Caroline Street, and 432 North Durham Street, both in Baltimore, Maryland, and [3] He entered the U.S. Navy on 15 January 1944.[4][5] Seaman Second Class Julius J. Allen was a member of the Port Chicago 50 who faced court-martial and jail for challenging working conditions at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. He was sentenced to ten years confinement on 18 November 1944.[6][7]

Seaman Second Class Allen was received on 15 January 1946 by the USS Martinez (PCC-1244), a patrol craft and submarine chaser, and had a rating change to Steward's Mate Second Class.[8] On 15 February 1946 he was advanced to Steward's Mate First Class.[9][10][11] On 15 June 1946 he was advanced to Cook 3rd Class (Ck3c) but on 1 July 1946 he was reduced back to Steward's Mate First Class (StM1c).[12][13][14] On 14 August 1946 he was transferred to the nearest intake station for further transfer to Bainbridge, Maryland. He was discharged on 21 August 1946.[15]

Julius died on 10 May 1981.[16] He was buried in Baltimore Cemetery, Baltimore, Baltimore City, Maryland, United States.[17] His headstone was ordered by his widow Lucille Allen of 1715 30th Street in Baltimore.[4]

Research Notes

Birthday and middle initial match a record for a Julius Allen living in Buffalo, N.Y., from 1995 to 2001.[18]
