Biography

Narrative from Findagrave.com:
Amanda Tennessee ALLEN was born June 23, 1855 in Arkansas (according to the 1880 Saline County census), and died March 8, 1929, in Saline County. Her parents were Fleming and Allie ALLEN. The 1880 census states that her father was born in Virginia, and her mother in Tennessee. She is said to have lived in Ft. Smith, Arkansas, with her parents during the Civil War. On July 26, 1915, Amanda signed a Widow's Application for a pension, noting her husband's death seven days earlier. A pension of $100 was approved.

The children of Henry Clay and Amanda were Martha Ann, Mary Lee, Francis Caldonia, Allie Lenora (b. November 8, 1879, d. October 21, 1880), Rosella Estelle, Henryetta Melvira (b. January 22, 1883; d. September 26, 1883), Claudia Elizabeth, William Henry, Alvin Clay, Thomas Cornelius (b. August 18, 1890; d. September 26, 1891), Jewel Calvin (b. October 6, 1892; d. December 10, 1892), Lella Pearl, Bernice Conley, and Amity J. (b. November 8, 1879; d. October 21, 1880).

Henry Clay was born on December 16, 1844, and died in Saline County on July 19, 1915. The 1880 Saline County census indicates that he was born in Alabama, as were his parents. During the Civil War, Henry Clay served in Co. D, 2 Regiment, of the Alabama Cavalry. The company muster roll for June 30, 1863 noted that he was due $24.40 pay for his horse at 40 cents a day. Tradition has it that his father and two brothers were killed in the war, but that he was not allowed to fight because he was underweight. He is also said to have been a courier for Gen. Robert E. LEE, but no verification of that has been found. At war's end his surviving brothers are said to have taken over the family farm, and would not let him stay. He went to Tennessee, where he married. His first wife died.

On June 2, 1913, Henry Clay signed an Application for Pension, stating that he was discharged from the service in May, 1865; that he owned property worth less than $400; and that he was disabled by rheumatism and age. A physician's certificate stated that Henry Clay had no wounds, and was three-quarters disabled. A $50 (per year, presumably) pension was approved. On June 8, 1914, Henry Clay applied for an increase in the pension, claiming disability by reason of "age and general disability." The accompanying physician's certificate again mentioned rheumatism. The pension was increased to $75.
