Biography

April 7, 1796 Know ye that we the said Thomas Allen and Esther[Field] Allen his wife of the Parish of Saint Marks in the County of Culpeper in the Colony of Virginia for and in consideration of the Natural Love good will and affection, which we have and do bear towards our loving son Henry and his heirs and assigns forever a certain Tract or parcel of Land lying and being in the Parish of Saint Marks in the County of Culpeper and Colony aforesaid and in the great fork of Rappahannock River and is bounded as follows: ESTHER FIELD ALLEN, HENRY'S MOTHER WAS LIVING ON APRIL 7, 1796, John Allen married Ursula Withers daughter of James Withers and Elizabeth Keen. They had children: John, Thomas, William, Joseph, James and Ann. Thomas Allen married Esther Field daughter of Henry Field and Esther James. Thomas and Esther had 10 children according to court papers settling his estate. They were not named. Henry Allen, John Allen, Esther Allen, Thomas Allen, Jr., and James Allen. Have no information on the other 5. Henry Allen married Catherine McConchie daughter of Alexander and Ann (LNU) McConchie. They had three sons: Henry, Jr. Allen, John Rusne Allen and one unknown. James Allen son of Thomas and Esther Allen had five children: John Field Allen, Sarah Kirk Pendleton, Ursla Withers Allen, Ann Field Allen and Betsy Allen.

[1] Fauquier County, Virginia. Deed of Gift to his Children July 17, 1802. To all whom these presents shall come I JAMES ALLEN Senior do send greeting. Know ye that I the said JAMES ALLEN of the County of Fauquier and State of Virginia for and in consideration of the love good will and affection which I have and do bear towards my loving children, to wit JOHN FIELD ALLEN, SARAH KIRK PENDLETON, URSLA WITHERS ALLEN, ANN FIELD ALLEN and BETSY ALLEN their heirs executors or administrators the following property to be equally divided among the above mentioned Children, to wit Slaves a Negro man by name of Peter, Three negro women by name Lucy and Else and Bet. One girl named Mary and four Negro Children: Charles, Willis, Delila and Agnes with all the increase of said Slaves. In short all the stock of horses, cattle, hogs, the household and kitchen furniture, plantation utensils, and all money's due me. The said JAMES ALLEN which property I have delivered them before the signing of these presents. To Have and to Hold the said property to these my Children, JOHN FIELD ALLEN, SARAH KIRK PENDLETON, URSLA WITHERS ALLEN, ANN FIELD ALLEN and BETSEY ALLEN their heirs Executors and administrators from hence forth, as their own property without any manner of condition.

In Witness whereof, I have hereunto put my hand and Seal this 17th day of July one thousand eight hundred and two. Signed Sealed and delivered in presence of: Natht.   • To son, William Allen, land that I bought from John Hopper, where Gerrard Edwards now lives. Sons, Joseph and James, to have land on which I now live.
  • To daughter, Ann Merr (or Marr), 2 slaves.

[3]ALLEN, URSULLA Will signed 12 August 1789. --- 1793 My father, James Withers, of Stafford County, bequeathed to me 2 slaves ? My late husband left these slaves by will and testament to his sons, William, James, Joseph Allen and his dau. Ann Bradford, to be given them at my decease, and doubt has a risen as to whether said husband had right to dispose of said Negroes. To daughter, Ann Bradford, all my wearing apparel. Grandsons: Baldwin Bradford and Armistead Minor Sons, Thomas, Joseph, James Allen Money to be paid widows of sons, John and William Allen. Exrs: Sons Thomas, James and Joseph Allen

[4] This Indenture made 19th November 1770 between WILLIAM WHEATLEY and SUSANNAH his Wife of County of Fauquier and THOMAS ALLEN of county of Culpeper .. in consideration of sumThirty pounds current money hath sold unto Thomas Allen 369 acres being a part of land laid of by Mr. HENRY FIELD, WM. STANTON & SIMON MILLER Gent attended by SAMUEL PANNILL Surveyor of the County of Culpeper who divided the same among the children of GEORGE WHEATLEY deceased as by Will directed the said land being Number two in the plat and survey thereof made now remaining in the clerks office & adjoining the lot which Thomas Allen now occupies noted in the said plat & by the name of the naked low ground reference being had Presence Henry Field Junr., William Wheatley Jams. Hume, Jos. Stuard Susanna Wheatley At Court held for Culpeper County 19th November 1770 This Indenture of Bargain and Sale ordered to be recorded Previous to which the said Susanna was first privily examined as the Law directs.

[5] THIS INDENTURE made this 16th day of August 1777 Between DANIEL FIELD and ANNA his Wife of County of Culpeper of one part and THOMAS ALLEN of aforesaid County Witnesseth that for sum Twenty pounds current money of Virginia Daniel Field & Anna his Wife hath given unto said Thomas Allen his heirs two hundred and thirty one acres of land in County of Culpeper bounded Begining at a white oak runing thence So. to a white oak on a hill side near the naked low Grounds thence So. to a Cherry tree on the North river bank in the said Naked low grounds thence up the several courses of said river to the mouth of Long Branch thence up the courses of Long Branch to a small branch to a pine on a PATH thence South East to the Begining In presence of BENJA. ROBERTS, Daniel Field jr. WILLIAM STANTON, BENJAMIN PARTLOW At a Court held for Culpeper County 18th August 1777 This Indenture ordered to be recorded.

[6] THIS INDENTURE made this Sixth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety one Between JOHN VILETT and JEMIMA his Wife of County of LOUDON of one part and THOMAS ALLEN of County of SHENADOAH of other part; Witnesseth that JOHN VILETT and JEMIMA his Wife in consideration of the full and just sum of Two hundred and fifty pounds current money of Virginia, by these presents do bargain and sell unto THOMAS ALLEN his heirs one certain parcel of land which JOHN VILETT purchased of BENJAMIN MYRES and ELIZABETH his Wife by Deed of Feoffment bearing date the Fifth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Ninety; lying in County of Culpeper and is bounded; Begining at a Stone on the bank of the RUSH RIVER, thence North seventy three degrees West thirteen poles to a Hickory, thence North twenty eight degrees West seventy two poles to an Ash, thence North seventy degrees East twenty two poles to two small Ash trees on the bank of said River, thence up said River the several meanders thereof One hundred and seventy five poles to two large white Oaks in ANTHONY MOOREs line and corner to GEORGE STROTHER deced., thence with STROTHERs line South nineteen degrees West seventy nine poles to two Spanish Oaks and one white Oak, thence South sixty degrees East seventy four pole to a Hickory, thence South six degrees West one hundred and thirty eight poles to two black Oaks, thence South fifty degrees East sixty poles to three red Oaks, corner to GEORGE CALVERT, thence South twenty two degrees East one hundred poles to a young Walnut and Sycamore within CALVERTs Fence, thence North forty nine degrees East one hundred and sixty six poles to a Pine, corner to WILLIAM DAVIS, thence North seventy one degrees West seventy poles to a black and white Oak on the River Bank, thence with the several meanders thereof to the begining; containing Two hundred and Thirty acres more or less (one acre of which is reserved whereon the MEETING HOUSE now stands for the use of the People called QUAKERS and their Sucessors forever), Together with the priviledges and advantages thereto belonging (except as before excepted) and the rents issues and profits thereof; To have and to hold the Two hundred and Thirty acres of land more or less (except as before excepted) with its appurtenances unto THOMAS ALLEN his heirs and JOHN TRIPLETT [sic Vilett] and JEMIMA his Wife do by these presents warrant and will forever defend the tract of land and premises (except as before excepted) unto THOMAS ALLEN his heirs free and clear from all Incumbrances and from the claims of all persons; In Witness whereof the said JOHN VILITT and ELIZABETH [sic Jemima] his Wife have hereto set their hands adn affixed their seals the day and year first written Sealed and Delivered in presence of WILLIAM CUNNINGHAM JOHN VIOLETT JOHN HICKMAN, JEMIMA VIOLETT SAMUEL WILKS SAMUEL WILKS JUNR. The Commonwealth of Virginia to THOMAS LEWIS, WILLIAM BRONAUGH and JOSEPH LANE, Gentlemen, Justices of LOUDOUN County, Greeting; Whereas (the Commission for the privy examination of JEMIMA. the Wife of JOHN VIOLETT); Witness JOHN JAMESON, Clerk of our said Court at the Courthouse aforesaid this Sixth day of November 1791 in the sixteenth year of the Commonwealth JOHN JAMESON LOUDOUN County Set.
