Biography

Jacob was born in 1828.^[1] He was the son of John Young and Margaret Huntley. He passed away in 1903.^[2]

Jacob (25), a servant, and Eliza (21) Young, both from Berwick-upon-Tweed arrived on the John Davies on 3 May 1855 along with their infant son John.^[3]

SUDDEN DEATH OF A TOWNSMAN.
A sudden death took place at the Palais Royal Hotel last evening, when Mr. Jacob Young, who for many years conducted a butchering establishment in East-street, came to his end. Shortly before 9 o'clock he went into the private bar of the hotel in company with another townsman. After being in the room only a few seconds Mr. Young fell to the floor and almost immediately expired. Dr. D. Cameron was called in, but was too late to be of service. The deceased's eldest son, Mr. John Young, who is employed at Mr. R. M'Leod's butcher's shop, East-street, was communicated with, and the body was taken into the deceased's home, which is only a few doors from the hotel. The late Mr. Young was a very old townsman, having lived here, we believe, between 45 and 50 years. He leaves a widow, two sons-John and Jacob Young--and two daughters to mourn their loss. One of the latter is Mrs. E. Warbrick and the other is unmarried. Dr. Thornton who had been attending the deceased for some, time gave a certificate that death was due to chronic nephritis. He stated that knowing the nature of the disease he was not surprised at the death occurring suddenly. The funeral will take place at 3 o'clock to-morrow (Sunday) afternoon.^[4]
