Biography

George was born in 1845, the son of John Wilbur and Mary Shaw.

The 1850 US census for Avon, Maine lists residents John Wilber (63), a farmer, Mary Wilber (42), John L Wilber (8), a student, Andrew Wilber (6), a student and George Wilber (4), a student. John owns real estate valued at $800.

The 1860 US census for Avon, Maine lists residents John Wilbur (74), a farmer, Mary Wilbur (52), housewife, John S Wilbur (18), a farmer and student, Andrew Wilbur (18), a farmer and student, George Wilbur (14), a student, and Frances M Wilbur (7), a student. John owns real estate valued at $1200 and has a personal estate of $2660. All were born in Maine.

He married Maria Lenda Harden at Strong, Maine on 9 Dec 1867. They were the parents of eight known children:

The 1930 US census for Strong, Maine lists residents as head of household George Wilber (84), widowed, married at age twenty, not employed, his daughter Altie M Wilber (42), single, not employed and granddaughter Ruth G Wilber (18), also single and not employed. They live in a two-family dwelling owned by George's son-in-law and daughter, Edward and Inez Stinchfield. They do not own a radio set.

George passed away in 1938 and is buried at the Mile Square Cemetery, Avon, Maine.

Obituary

GEORGE WILBUR "Former School Superintendent at Strong Died" STRONG -- George Wilbur, a former superintendent of schools for a number of years, died Thursday morning at 3 o'clock, at his farm home where he had lived in Avon the past 50 years. He had been ill two weeks. He was born in Avon on Oct. 28, 1845, the son of John and Mary Shaw Wilbur. He was a graduate of Strong High School. Mr. Wilbur taught school in his young manhood, but for the last 50 years had made farming his occupation. He was a charter member and Golden Sheaf member of Aurora Grange and had served as master of Strong Grange and of Phillips Grange. He attended church, although he was not a member of any church. He had been a member of the board of selectmen and had served on the jury. Mr. Wilbur married Miss Lenda Marie Harden and to them eight children were born, seven now living. They are: one son, Charles Wilbur of Portland; six daughters, Mrs Inez Stinchfield of Strong; Mrs. Guy Kershner of Farmington; Mrs. Leslie Stinchfield of West Peru; Mrs. Maria Quimby of Rangeley; Miss Altie Wilbur of Avon; and Mrs. George Voter of Avon. A daughter, Mrs. Alice Moores died seven years ago. Published Lewiston Daily Sun November 16, 1938
