In the 1841 census William and Sarah are living in Balsham, Cambridgeshire, with their children Sarah, William, Elizabeth, Maryann, James, Jane, Eliza and Susan. The last column titled "Where Born" is split into 2 - "Whether born in the same County" and "Whether born in Scotland, Ireland or Foreign Parts". William has stated that he was not born in the same County, but has not specified in the last column where (S, I or F). [2]

In 1861 William is a widower at the home of his married daughter Sarah (Webb) at 17 Susannah street, Poplar, Middlesex. The census records state that William is a dock labourer, but he has always been an agricultural labourer (farmer), so that information is questionable. [4]

Did William return to Cambridgeshire after 1861? Poplar is about 58 miles from Balsham, was he just there to visit his daughter? There is a death for a William Webb, farm labourer aged 65 at the Union Workhouse in Linton, Cambridgeshire on 23 September 1869 [5] The Workhouse in Linton covers 22 parishes in Cambridgeshire, including Balsham. See: (https://www.workhouses.org.uk/Linton/) William Webb was buried 27 September 1869 in Balsham, Cambridgeshire. [6]
William is not the son of John Webb (1779-1819) and Elizabeth Chiles (1780-1857). Their son William Webb (1802-1829), occupation carpenter, died age 27 and was buried 10 December 1829 in Balsham, Cambridgeshire.
He is also not the son of Robert Webb (bef.1770-) and Ann Embleton (1780-1846). Their son William Webb (1799-1816) was born 11 August 1799 and baptised 30 July 1800 in Linton, Cambridgeshire. He died age 17 and was buried 14 November 1816 in Balsham, Cambridgeshire.
It is possible that William is the brother of Elizabeth (Webb) Clayton.
In the 1841 census William has stated that he was not born in the County, whereas William does not state where he was born, Elizabeth has recorded "I" in the column for "Whether born in Scotland, Ireland or Foreign Parts", suggesting she was born in Ireland, but records have not been located to verify this.
William Webb recorded No to born in County |
Elizabeth (Webb) Clayton recorded "I" as place of birth |
In the 1851 census both William and Elizabeth have stated that they were born in Balsham, Cambridgeshire.
Balsham is less than 2 miles from West Wratting, and about 4 miles from Fulbourn, Cambridgeshire where Elizabeth (Webb) Clayton was married and lived.
If William and Elizabeth were not born in Cambridgeshire, what brought them here? And what happened to their parents?
DNA matches for descendants of William Webb via his children Sarah (1827) Mary Ann (1835) and Eliza (1840) with descendants of Elizabeth (Webb) Clayton via her children William (1824) John (1827) and Agnes (1835) suggests they could be siblings. Triangulation would confirm this, but these matches are with Ancestry, with not enough uploaded to Gedmatch to utilise a chromosome browser. This is an ongoing project.
