Hello Hein,

Regarding Auguste van der Mersch's profile on WikiTree, (10:47: Hein van der Mescht merged Amelia Victoria (Claeys) van der Mersch (abt.1828-) into Auguste Sylvain van der Mersch (1852-). (Claeys-377 into Van_der_Mersch-1602 for new LNAB: Correction)) -- please see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Merging. It is only appropriate to merge duplicates, which almost never includes merging a female profile into a male.

Thanks, Stephanie Ward

Hi Stephanie

Thank you for your comment, I was working late and I created the incorrect profile for the wrong person. Hence my correction.

Hi! You've added a number of pre-1700 profiles with the only source being the default "Unsourced family tree handed down to Hein van der Mescht."

Pre-1700 profiles require reliable sourcing. See Help: Pre-1700 Profiles for details. For links to project-specific pages about reliable sources, see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Reliable_Sources_for_Pre-1700_Profiles

Cheers, Liz

Hi Liz,

I might do it different, I first create the profile and then I will improve & add sources. If you look at the profile you commented on it was done.

Hi again Hein

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz. As Pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working within a project is essential

Please ensure locations are entered on all profiles and data matches the dates of the profile. Avoid abbreviations, add sources with citations & links for sources to support the data. From wiki ID go to Research to find sources.  Please review Help Sources  /  Source for pre1700 Profiles  /  Pre-1700 Cite reliable sources

The South_Africa Project  would be of interest. Adding the tag SOUTH_AFRICA will connect you  Follow this link for your Tags:   your tags

Explore Pre-1700 Projects list to find one that fits your research focus.

If English is not your native language, would you consider adding our https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Languages  to your biography? The link  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ISO_639-1_codes  will explain how to determine which codes to use. It really helps to know the languages of WikiTree members.  Once you have the codes for the languages, copy those codes, then edit your own profile. Scroll down until you get to your biography section and post the template under the Biography heading.  Add your language codes where the question marks are in the template and then save. This will place a box on your profile, which lets others know which languages you are comfortable with and what level of proficiency you have. Occasionally assistance is needed to help others who need help with translating pages or documents.

PPS. Please avoid the use of abbreviations as they can mean different things in different countries, always use the full words

Hi Janet,

I am getting on well on Wikitree. I am just frustrated and don't know what else to do to trace my Ancestor Johan Michiel van der Mist ( Mesch/Mescht/Miss/Mess the line proginator) in Europe. My handed down information differs significantly from the sources. My greatgrand father who knew his granfather the Proginator of our line had a very different story to tell and my grandfather documented the story, so I am at my whits end!

Regards

Hein

Hi Hein

Conundrums like these make life as you say frustrating. It is not unusual for family history to differ to the sources, You can note this on the profiles you create. As Philip mentioned same person different spellings lead to confusion. As a transcriber for another site, I have seen some records which have in the same record, different spelling for each family member.

I would suggest writing a post in the Genealogist 2 Genealogist (G2G) forum mark as genealogy help.. to get to your G2G link in my earlier message or from the drop down menu from the Help tab top right of your profile.

Tag the post with Brickwall then add a country tag, a surname tag and Sources

Also see - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Family_Brick_Walls If you have created a profile you can add this category above the biography heading using [[ ]] to surround the category

Hope this helps, let me know if you have more questions

Hi Hein, a warm welcome to WikiTree! Many / most of the South African genealogical lines and profiles of the eigtheenth and seventeenth periods (and earlier) have already been made. Many have also been validated with primary sources. I see that you have created a few duplicates, which is problematic because it causes a lot of unnecessary work for all inlvolved. When you create profiles, the system won't show duplicates already existing when the LNAB's (LastNameAtBaptism/Birth) are spelled in different ways. You need to search manually first, sort by date, and then find the already existing profiles. A few handy links to get you started:
  1. Getting Started
  2. Adding to WikiTree.
  3. Pre-1700 Quiz (self-certifying in order to understand better how to do pre-1700 genealogical work on WikiTree)
  4. What are duplicates? Why should and how can they be avoided?
  5. G2G Help - for any questions you may have ....

Perhaps you would like to join the South African Roots Project ? Besides links to sources, there are help pages that might also be useful.

Welcome

I am pleased to confirm you as a member, and welcome you to the WikiTree family, your contributions will go a long way to joining the world together. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.

I would suggest starting with the How-to pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.

I am here to answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site

Happy tree climbing
