The News-Herald - 1949 Clarence A. Turner, Grove Distributor of News-Herald, Dies Clarence A. Turner, 72, of 420 Egbert Street, for more than 30 years The News-Herald distributor for Rocky Grove, a veteran of the Spanish-American War and one of the best known men in the district, died at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Franklin Hospital. While Mr. Turner had not been in the best of health for some time his death was unexpected and proved a severe shock to his family and legion of friends. A son of Tirzah Carter and William Turner, he was born March 24, 1877, in Sugarcreek Township. Mr. Turner entered the service during the Spanish-American War on April 27, 1898 in Franklin. While in the service, he held the grad of sergeant in Company F, 16th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was honorably discharged on Dec 27, 1898, in Oil City. At one time Mr. Turner was tax collector for Sugarcreek Township. Mr. Turner was a man of many admirable traits, was friendly and highly regarded in the community. As the News-Herald's distributor in Rocky Grove Mr. Turner had through the years employed many boys and his influence with these boys was always for the good. Mr. Turner knew virtually every person in the community in which he served and he had friends everywhere. He was united in marriage with Mable Hillard, on March 20, 1935, in Sherman, N.Y. Mrs. Turner survives together with one sister, Mrs. C. A. Peterson, of Rocky Grove. Mr. Turner was a member of the Galloway Methodist Church and the Charles P. Barnes Camp, United Spanish War Veterans. The body was removed to the Burger Funeral Home where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday by Rev. Cyrus W. Moorhead, minister of the Rocky Grove Avenue Presbyterian Church, and Rev. Frank A. Towers, pastor of the Fox Street Church of God, officiating. Interment will be in the Franklin Cemetery.
