I've been researching my genealogy almost daily since 2004. I always verify that the info I find is valid before I use it in my tree -- IMHO, it dishonors an ancestor to state facts about them that aren't true, especially when it's just an opinion or a family legend. My pet peeve is finding an alternative fact copied from a publication or another tree or a memorial, because someone else will eventually use that bad info as a fact in their tree.
