Anna (Hannah) Tonkin daughter of Elizabeth and Stephen was born 9 June 1840 in St Agnes, Cornwall, England.[1] [2]

On 11 Oct 1857 Hannah age 17 was charged with stealing a bottle of perfume, 6 apples and a reel of cotton, property of John Pengelly Endean ironmonger at Truro. Found in her box the perfume and one apple, and five apples found in the possession of her sister Catherine. She pleaded guilty and was committed to 24 days hard labour in Bodmin Gaol. Her description reads: height 5' 1", dark eyes, sandy brown hair, sallow complexion, pockmarked, freckled, scar on nose. She can also read and write. [3]

On Monday, before the Mayor and W.T. Chapel Esq., Hannah Tonkin single woman, of St Agnes, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a glass bottle containing perfume and six apples, value 4s 6d., from her master Mr J.P. Endean, ironmonger, Boscawen-street Truro. She was committed for 24 days hard labour. [4]

She married William Opie 23 Jul 1865 at the parish church in Illogan with witnesses Richard Reynolds and Louisa Reynolds. [5]

Anna and William Opie sailed 7 days after their marriage on the Adamant departing Plymouth on 30 July 1865 and arriving at Port Adelaide on 17 October 1865. [6]

They had 10 children: Harry 1866 Elizabeth Emma 1867 Arthur Stephen 1870 Alfred William 1871 Sabina Tonkin 1874 Clarence William 1879 Emily Louisa 1882 Alma Rosebery Victoria 1883 Garnet 1886 and Gertrude Arlington 1886.

On the 4 Sep 1887 at age 44 Anna was admitted to the Wallaroo Hospital with enteric fever. She was there for 110 days being discharged on the 22 Dec 1887. Her husband William had been also in hospital with enteric fever for 48 days discharged on the 16 Nov, and 2 of her children also admitted with enteric fever. Sabina 66 days discharged 21 Nov and Clarence 94 days discharged 17 Nov. [7]

Hannah passed away age 69 on 2 July 1912 [8] and was buried in Wallaroo Cemetery. [9]

Mrs W Opie, an old resident of Wallaroo who died on Tuesday of last week at the age of 69, was a daughter of Captain Stephen Tonkin of Trevellas Coomb, St Agnes, Cornwall. She accompanied her husband to South Australia in the year 1865 and had resided in Wallaroo for 47 years. The deceased was a great sufferer of late, and her death was not entirely unexpected. She left, in addition to her husband, a family of one son and three daughters. [10]
