Biography

James was born in 1847 in Blakeney, Norfolk., and married Martha Ann Bone there in 1867. He was with Martha Ann and their first two children in Blakeney in 1871.

He married Martha Dean in South Shields in 1875, I believe this marriage to be bigamous.

He was in Hebburn in 1891, working as a labourer in the chemical works, with his first wife, Martha Ann (nee Bone, died 1898). He married his housekeeper, Jessie Finley (nee Wells) in South Shields in 1903. After her death he appears to have returned to Norfolk to live with his oldest son, who was his heir when he died in 1934.

Research notes

Needs more work to establish that there was only ONE James Tomlin of this age in the South Shields area in 1875. The odds of there being 2 James Tomlins in Jarrow area (both aged 28 and son of William Tomlin) in 1875 are pretty slim.
