Astley Thompson VD was born in Glamorgan, Wales.

Astley John Onslow Thompson, the son of Astley Thompson and his wife Udea Mary Anne Moriarty, was baptised 23 Feb 1865 at Eglwysilan, Glamorganshire, Wales. ^[1]

LT COL Astley Thompson VD was killed in action at Gallipoli, Turkey during The Great War.

Lieutenant Colonel Astley John Onslow Thompson, commanding officer of the 4th Bn., Australian Infantry, A.I.F., died 26 April 1915 and was buried or commemorated at 4th Battalion Parade Ground Cemetary, A. 11. in Turkey (including Gallipoli). He had earned the Volunteer Officers' Decoration, and was Mentioned in Despatches. ^[2] Probate of his will was granted to James William MacArthur Onslow and Ivor William Onslow Thompson at Sydney with a portion of his estated granted at London. ^[3]
