Biography

Arthur was born in 1845 in Cotta, Ceylon, now known as Kotte, Sri Lanka. In later census documents this is generalised to 'East Indies'[1].

In 1851 the family is living at the Rectory in Burythrope, Yorkshire. Francis William is age 40, the Curate, born in Edmonton, Middlesex. Caroline Bella is also 40, born in Southampton. Their children Caroline Letitia, age 11; Francis Henry Wickham, age 9; Mason Dudley, age 8; Arthur Brooke, age 6; and Edward Alexander were born in Celon, East Indies (Ceylon, now Sri Lanka). Henrietta Althea is 8 months, having been born in Burythorpe after their return to England. Living with them were Mary Price, a Governess and Caroline Bella’s sister, age 27, born in Plymouth, Devon. Two servants lived with the family: Mary Ann Wilson, age 18, born in Kenneythorpe, Yorkshire and Elizabeth, age 13, born in Burythorpe Yorkshire[2].

The family was living at 101 Chapmans Lane, Waddington, Lincolnshire, at the time of the 1861 Census. Rev. Taylor is listed as age 45, the Curate of Harmston, born in Edmonton, Middlesex. Living with him are Caroline, his wife, born in Southhampton, Hampshire; Arthur, age 16, and Edward, age 15, both born in Cotta, Ceylon[3]; Henrietta Althea, age 10 and Mary, age 7, both born in Burythorpe. Also living with the family was Sarah Torville, age 20 born in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, a domestic servant. Daughter Caroline, and sons Francis and Mason were no longer living with the family at this time[4].

In 1871 Arthur was lodging with his future in-laws at 43 Havelock St, Islington. Thomas F Goodall, an Engine Driver, age 53; Sarah, also age 52; their daughters Mary Ann, Arthur's bride in the next year, age 23 and Sarah J, age 15 are living in the household. Arthur is 27 and John Reynolds is also a lodger with the Goodalls, both are clerks. The parents were born in Monmouth, Mary Ann in Bridgend, Glamorgan, Sarah in Islington[5].

Arthur and Mary Ann Goodall were married in St Andrew's Church, Barnsbury, Islington, on 16 Jul 1872. Both previously not married. Mary Ann’s father was Thomas Goodall, an engineer. The marriage was witnessed by Thomas Goodall and Sarah Jane Goodall.[6].

In the 1881 England Census Arthur and Mary Ann are living at 12 Randall Terr. District 36, Islington West, London with Sarah Goodall, age 62, widowed, a dressmaker, and her daughter, Sarah Ann, age 44, unmarried, also a dressmaker, Mary Ann’s mother and sister. Arthur, age 36, a railway clerk, is listed as born in Calcutta, Ceylon. Note: Calcutta (now Kolkata) is the capital of West Bengal, India. At the time of Arthur’s birth is was the capital of India, Burma and Ceylon under the British Raj and the metropolitan see of the Church of India, Burma and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). Perhaps this is the origin of the confusing entry[7]. Mary Ann’s place of birth is given as Bridgend, Glamorgan, Wales. Arthur and Mary Ann’s children, Percy F., age 4, and Cecil A., age 1, both born in Islington are living with them[8].

In 1891 the family has moved to 44 Havelock St, Islington, Thornhill, London, in the parish of St. Michaels. Arthur, age 47 is a railway Clerk, Mary A is 43. Their children Percy F.,13, Cecil A., 10, Thomas E. and Mary J. were all born in Islington, London[9].
