Rufus Squires was born about 1846 in Halifax, Halifax County, Virginia.[1] His father was named something like Serry/Terry/Jerry/Carry Squires.[2][3] In 1860, his family lived in Gallipolis Township, Gallia County, Ohio.[2]
Rufus served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He enlisted as a private in Company E of the 27th Regiment of the United States Colored Infantry on 5 Feb 1864.[1] He mustered out on 21 Sep 1865.[4]
In 1870, Rufus was living in the household of Squires Lewis in Greenfield Township, Gallia County, Ohio and working as a farm hand.[5]
Around 1871, Rufus married Maria (Clay) Allen.[6] Maria had several young children from before their marriage and they also had several children together. They lived in Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio.[7][6][8] Maria died in 1914. After her death, Rufus moved to Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio where he lived with his daughter Frances (Squires) Bell.[9][10]
Rufus died on 11 May 1924 at his daughter Frances's home in Columbus, Ohio.[3][10] He was buried in Pine Street Colored Cemetery in Gallipolis, Ohio.[11]
