Goals

This team is part of the US Black Heritage Project. Our goals are the following with specific emphasis on North Carolina:

  • To collect in one place information and resources to assist in building and documenting African-American Genealogies.
  • To create the largest online public database of connected African-American families.
  • To bring together WikiTreers interested in connecting African-American families to the Global Family Tree.
  • To process all types of documents from North Carolina regarding free and enslaved ancestors with the goal of creating their profiles and connecting them to their descendants.
  • To provide and maintain a logical and organized structure to help individuals identify their ancestors and celebrate their history.
  • To improve all profiles of ancestors with Black heritage in North Carolina, which may include biography building, sourcing, and making correct connections.

I added some geographic reference resources to enable comparison of genealogical research on a dated record to put it in the proper geographic context that the writers of the record actually lived in. County boundaries have changed so much over time that a reference in 1830 to a county may imply a place a few hundred miles from the place the dated record actually meant. I did not mean to step on any toes, so please feel free to reverse the changes if it does not fit the purpose of this page. Also please advise if the NC and USBHP leaders agree this useful and I would provide similar for the other USBHP province/state team pages.

I ran this past the other team leaders and project managers, and the outcome was that we should keep these state-level pages as clean and project related as possible, so these resources you've posted, while useful, likely belong elsewhere. I will take care of it.
