Memoir of the Bolling Family
- Edition by Thomas H. Wynne (1820-1875) of a manuscript written in 1764 in French by Robert Bolling (1738-1775), translated in 1803 by John Robertson (1787-1873), with some interlined annotations by John Randolph of Roanoke (1773-1833).
- Published Richmond, VA, 1868

Ostensibly, at least, this book consists of a printed edition of an old manuscript, with extensive annotations and additions by the editor. These endnotes and appendices account for most of the book.
The core MS is thus a book within a book, occupying only pages 1-12, including its own title page. This could make for very long-winded repetitive pedantic citations, along the lines of
- Bolling, Robert (1764). "Memoirs of the Bolling Family", trans. John Robertson (1803), in A Memoir of a Portion of the Bolling Family in England and Virginia, ed. Thomas H. Wynne (1868), p. 12.
The above examples are a suggested compromise.
The publication date of 1868 is taken from the main title page, notwithstanding that Wynne's preface is dated 1869.
