History
Harlem Township is one of the oldest towns in Winnebago County. It was first surveyed in 1835. It was named by early settlers from the Dutch Settlement Harlem on Long Island in New York. [1] For more about the history and first settlers of Harlem Township see Harlem Township One Place Study
Rock Cut State Park
In 1956 the Illinois General Assembly appropriated $165,000 to acquire land for a state park and artificial lake. [2] Several old homes and farms were acquired to make room for the park. My great grandparents’ farm was one of them

| Robert Colville Home |
In February 1958 Robert Arthur Colville (my cousin) was awarded $12,510 for 34.11 acres of the family homestead for the creation of the park. The old house is now the office building for the park. [3]
