Elbert Alonzo Smith: Today we acknowledge the passing of Elbert Alonzo Smith of Bible Hill, who passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, September 27, 2018, at the age of 97 years.
Born in Shinemecas Bridge, Cumb. Co., NS, where he grew up, he was a son of the late George and Arnetta (Mills) Smith.
Elbert moved to Truro to work in 1939, being a mechanic by trade, retiring at the age of 65. He and his wife Doreen then made many trips with their camper down South and different places in Canada, which they enjoyed very much.
He was a founding member of the Bible Hill Fire Brigade in 1946, where he was very involved, and was a former Chief.
Also a founding and active member of St. David’s United Church Bible Hill in 1946.
Elbert was a community oriented person, and a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all. He is the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving are his wife of 75 years, the former Doreen (Gorrie) Smith; daughter, Debra Vey Gullon, East Mountain; son, Elbert Dana Smith, Bible Hill; granddaughter, Jaclyn (James) MacPherson, Bible Hill; grandsons, Gregory (Lisa) Gullon, East Mountain, Dana Craig Smith (Stephanie Wesley), BC; great-grandchildren, Alex Gullon, Seth MacPherson, Hailey; nieces, Barb, Heather. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his step-father, Crawford Blair; brother, Sherman Smith; son-in-law, Stephen Gullon; nephew, Wayne.
No visitation by request.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street Truro, from where a Firefighter’s Tribute Service conducted by the Bible Hill Fire Brigade and surrounding Brigades, will be held 7pm Wednesday, October 3.
A graveside service and interment will be held 2 pm Thursday, October 4, in the Bible Hill Cemetery, Bible Hill, with Rev. Donna Lawrence officiating. (Everyone welcome to both services).
No flowers by request.
Donations in Elbert’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
