Biography

Walter Smith was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)

Walter was born in 1849.^[1] He was the son of John Smith and Isabella/Isobel Donald. He passed away in 1922. ^[2] He is buried in the Bundaberg General Cemetery, Queensland.^[3]

Walter lived as the common law husband of Sarah Jane Gilliland.

Death of an Old Resident.
With almost tragic suddenness Mr. Walter Smith, an old resident of Bundaberg, passed away yesterday afternoon at his residence, Bourbon Estate, at the rear of the Show, Grounds. He resided in a humble home by himself, and, although no one was present when he passed away, he had been noticed in his doorway, by his son-in-law, a few minutes previous to his demise being discovered, and there was no outward sign to cause a suspicion that his end was so near. Mr. Walter Smith was one of the olden day teamsters of Bundaberg. He was one of early selectors at Goodwood, but for many years he- was in the employ of the late Mr. T. Keys, and several of his numerous sons have been in the employ of this firm for a very lengthy period. Mr. Smith, who was 78 years of age, lost his wife many years ago, but he is survived by a very large family of sons and daughters The funeral will take place. at 11 o'clock tomorrow morning, the arrangements being in the hands of Messrs F. C. Brown and Co.^[4]
