Biography

John was born on 23 May 1840. He emigrated to New Zealand, at the age of 1yr on the Oriental with his parents, brother and sister in 1841.^[1]

He married Agnes Lambert in 1867.^[2] His will^[3] and a newspaper death notice^[4] show (some of their) children as:

1. James
2. Jessie Stoddart (Chapman)
3. John Edward
4. Susannah (Susan) Miriam (Aplin)
5. Thomas Lambert
6. Frances Agnes (Colway)
7. Ethel May (Staples)^[5]

After Agnes's death, John re-married to widow Frances (Richardson) McKenzie.^[6]

He passed away in 1924^[7][8] at his residence 21 South Road, Masterton and is buried in the Clareville Cemetery, Carterton.^[9]

Research Notes

In the same plot at Clareville Cemetery, are his wife, Agnes died 1903, Susannah (his mother) died 1887, Frances Agnes died aged 9 in 1882 (this suggests there were two girls of this name born to John and Agnes)^[10] and Leonard James Smith with no dates. An NZBDM search suggests he may be the infant son of James and Sarah Smith who died aged 4 months in 1887.
