Mary Jane Smith was born in Long Newton, Durham, in 1855 and was the third daughter of James Smith and Lettice Elizabeth Clues.[1]


On the 1861 census, Mary Jane, aged 5 years, is living at 1 Albion Street, Stockton, with her paternal uncle, Finlowe Smith, and his wife, Mary.[2]

After the death of her parents, Mary Jane and her siblings lived with Finlowe Smith on a permanent basis. On the 1871 census, Mary Jane, aged 15 years, is living at 1 Albion Street, Stockton, with Finlowe, and her siblings: Maria (20 years), James (17 years) and Susan (14 years).[3]
