John Breingan was born on the 23 October 1886, possibly at Izatt Street, in the Town of Alloa, on the north bank of the Forth at the spot where some say it ceases to be the River Forth and becomes the Firth of Forth, District of Alloa, Clackmannanshire, Scotland[1]. He was the natural born son of Robert Smith and Agnes Breckenridge.

In the Census of 1901, Agnes has lost "husband" Robert (Smith) and has married James (Carr). The couple live with his daughter Ann "Annie" (Carr); her children Agnes, John Breingan and Mary (Smith) and their son, Richard (Carr). Their address is 17 Coalgate, in the Town of Alloa, Alloa District, Clackmannanshire, Scotland[5].
With the Canada Census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, John Breingan (Smith) has married Christina Winifred (Marshall) and they are living with thier son Frederick Gordon (Smith) at 20, 64 Cameron Street, in the capital City of Regina, Province of Saskatchewan, Canada[6][7]. By 1921, the couple are living in the City of Swift Current, Province of Saskatchewan, in Canada. They reside there with children Frederick Gordon and Robert Marshall (Smith)[8].

His burial takes place around the 1 January 1953 at the Royal Oak Burial Park Cemetery, 4673 Falaise Drive, in the City of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada[11].
